Bike recommendations??

After having had an 18 month break from bikes, I'm looking at getting back on two wheels in the next couple of months (need to sell my Westfield first). After always riding sports bikes, I was thinking of something different (KTM EXC400 or similar). Having no experience at all of this type of bike, I was wondering what they were like and if anyone could recommend a particular make/model etc??

Will probably just use it to arse around on, maybe a few blats round the Shropshire lanes or even some off roading if I knew where to go

Any advice would be appreciated.
