Well, the Husky (and Focus Izalco Extreme bicycle) has made way and the Ducati has been ordered. Ususally i buy used, to save a stack of dosh, but i have decided to do my bit for Ducati dealerships and buy new.
I have been given a couple of sweeteners, but it's going to leave the wallet rather bare.
Still, it's shaping up to be one hell of a bike and offer something a little different to my last superbike, a GSXR1000.

I don't know all the spec yet, but it has lighter wheels/better suspension/better brakes than the 1098 and is actually 1198cc.

Now THAT i cannot wait for, because my 999R had loadsa shove and a 1200cc Ducati 'R' is going to be a very special engine, i'd say.

180 bhp sounds alright, too!

Looking at the details i've been given, they are saying just 165 kgs, which is incredible for a V-twin with 180 bhp and 99 lbs-ft.
106x67.9 bore and stroke, so very over-square still and with a couple of pretty damn big pistons!
The stroke is a lot longer than the 999R i had, so i am expecting a lot more grunt from say 2,000 rpm, into the mid-range.

Sorry to lower the tone but you must be looking at close to £20k

It's higher than that. eek

The 999R was £19,750 (list) back in 2003, so the 1098R is actual a better buy at the predicted £24,000.

I have negotiated a small sweetener of 5% off whatever the retail price is set at, which will help a little, but i am acutely aware that this bike will be expensive.
I am putting £15K down and having the rest over 1 year on 0 % finance.

All-round, it's not too bad and the bike will be both unique and rare.

Good man!

Extremely pleased for you, even if that is somewhat tinged with a wee bit of jealousy!

It looks like it will be a stunning ride, and probably worth every penny.

Johnny.

Value-wise, i am looking at it like this.
I am trying not to simply compare it with an R1 or ZX10R. They offer much better VFM, of course.

But you could easily spend £100K+ on a 1000cc UJM race bike and it'd be no more fun on the road or track, for the average sports bike rider, than the 1098R.
The Ducati will also have way more character and an absolutely awesome sound track, straight out of the crate! No need for aftermarket pipes with this baby! biggrin

Mate, sounds like an absolute peach. well pleased for ya. When will she be arriving?
When you say it'll offer something different from the GXSR, how exactly...cause it's a V-Twin therefore the delivery etc? I guess weight, BHP and allthose silly numbers are pretty much the same?

Cheers, and well done again!!!

Erm, well, when i had my 999R, it was the ultimate and most powerful road v-twin ever made, yet had less power than my GSXR1000, but whereas the Suzuki could easily have been an R1 or a ZX10R or a Fireblade, the 999R was utterly unique. The feel, the sound, the power through the mid-range, etc.
Ultimate 'measurable' performance may well be around the same as the new R1, but the actual riding experience will be totally different, much better, in my view.
As fantastic as the Jap 1000s are-and they are-they are pretty soul-less to me and let's face it, they don't sound as good as a 999/1098/1198 Ducati!

Should be sensational - good man!

The 1098s pulls my arms out through the midrange so good only knows what the 1200 will feel like!

How times change!
My first decent Italian bike was a Mike Hailwood Replica Ducati 900 SS.

Ducati MHR. 863cc v-twin, desmo. 70 bhp. 190 kgs.

Ducati 1098R. 1198cc v-twin, desmo. 180 bhp. 165 kgs.

Got ya! Not ridden one, and lets face it, no-one's gonna lend me theirs, but you can't beat the sound.

Going by a friend who works at Ducati in California, the 1198cc engine in the 1098R has got not just the 100cc bigger capacity, but bigger valves and more lumpy camshafts, too. The exhausts are bigger from the ports backwards, too and the engine, as a whole is more extreme.
It may well be that the gains over your (excellent) bike will be above 4,000 rpm.
