Having thought that 40% of bikers being untaxed was a bit off I decided to read the reports myself.

http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/statistics/datatablespub...

http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/statistics/datatablespub...

On page 12 the table sample clearly states:

Out of 9,666 bikes, 8239 (85.24%)motorcycles were taxed, 1427 (14.76%) were untaxed when comparing the license plates to DVLA records.

Now the way they got 40% is beyond me and takes some bending of those statistics.

They in the next page (13) then state:

"Then the estimator described as ‘crude measure of
evasion’ in §2.2 (Department for Transport, 2007)"

They then apply the "crude" (in their own words) estimator for evasion.

So 40% is total nonsense!!!

Statistics can be manipulated to mean just about anything you want them to.

Well remember that press recently about motorcyclists being more likely to drink and drive?

Only true in the "Under 17" category for motorcyclists.... That would be scooters then, not motorbikes? And in every other category of age, drivers were higher.

When you look into the statistics - these from the Compendium of Motorcycle Statistics 2007, you see how the anti-bike MP's are just blatantly full of crap.

Do you think some idiot misheard the 14 for 40 and never bothered correcting themselves?

I think the estimates in the report range from the 14% (observed sample) to 40% difference between observed sample in June and records check in September (once the FWBs had re-sorned their summer toys), and the soundbite hungry MPs chose to quote the latter.

Personally, I've given up even trying to decipher the bullshit anymore. There's the sane, well-balanced view and there's the politicians' views. We only get to hear the latter and it's the latter that dictates our future freedoms and there's nothing at all we can do about it.
