for a non conforming number plate

the officer dealing was very nice about it and although my plate is only slightly smaller he said the DVLA are being red hot over the whole number plate issue now, he took a photo of my number plate with his book up against it for size referance...he said if i get stopped again with that size plate i will get my reg taken off me and will have to have a "Q" plate assigend to my bike, I DONT FANCY THAT TBH

i was given a £30 "fixed penalty notice,non-endorsable offence" stating the offence as "registration mark not conforming"....looks like i can pay it over the phone at the fixed penalty office in winchester, i'll give them a ring later on

i fitted my full size plate as soon as i got home ,so lesson learnt

smile

just a warning as im sure you guys all have full size number plates

I have to admit I have never "altered" my plates on any vehicle. Just not worth it! (and you look like a right Spaz if it's an attempt to spell something biggrin)

As long as the letters and numbers are the right size not a problem I don't think.

Although I really am guessing here biggrin

my plate was slightly undersize and still perfectly readable
How undersize was it? The smallest font size you're allowed on a bike is 64mm

Damn, I was just going to do the same, eek keep the lettering and just get rid of all the other stuff, the euro sign and border. Seems a bit harsh if you consider all the car plates that have been altered to "spell" stuff. mad

they will get stopped too!

mine was a normal age related plate clearly readable, not altered in anyway...no funny spacing or misplaced full stops and of 7" X 5" in ARIAL font

THE DLVA AND POLICE ARE PUTTING A STOP TO THIS ONCE AND FOR ALL

Nice to see consistent policing, isnt it? It was only a couple of months ago that the ACPO guidelines mentioned readability at 20.5m as a subjective test, rather than fonts and letter sizes, then along comes Operation Larch. Still, this particular police target only lasts until Feb 2nd, so not long now...

Its to make sure the revenue cameras can read your plates more than anything else, why else change the policy?

And thats the thing that got me quite annoyed last time I got a HORT1, on the Mille. I patiently explained about the ACPO guidelines to the officer, he agreed and pointed out that it was to ensure that the cameras could read my plate. I pointed out that I was on the way back from a speed awareness course from a camera who obviously could read the fricking plate, thankyou very much. That one was around 6x5, and perfectly legible.

New plates all round then as this seems to be becoming an issue. I chopped the bottom crap off the blade sailboard when I bought it 7 years ago and the ducati plate is undersized too.

Its a very short lived issue from what I can see. Seems to be a short term operation until Feb 2nd, so I personally wouldnt bother (and will not be). Specially if its going to snow frown

Small plates really -off cops.

Round here they dont seem to mind too much if you have a dark visor or loud exhaust, but if you got a small plate they pull you up and do you for the lot to teach you a lesson.

My ex boss found out the hard way. How I laughed.

I got pulled last week for something else.
My plate is 180x130mm and the BiB said although it was smaller than standard they weren't bothered as it was still easily readable.

As Mr Randle said, seems to be a it of inconsistency out there. I much prefer discretionary judgements by the officers concerned to a blanket mandate by some faceless mong in an office somewhere.

agreed, look how they say dark visors are Ok if used properly but the BiB seem to have different ideas 1 place to another

When I last got pulled - I had a dark visor on, no baffle in my exhaust, and a number plate that is too small (not ridiculous - I think is an inch smaller all the way round).

Bearing in mind that it was speeding, and the guy was not impressed with me at all, I was shocked when after going over the bike with a toothcomb, checking VIN number, Tax etc etc - he made no mention of any of the three offences.

During our subsequent chat he did admit that he was also a biker - with the same bike. So perhaps this helped - but then on the other hand he also knew what to look for!

At the moment the bike has baffle in and original plate on - as MOT was only a couple of weeks ago, and as it is Winter no dark visor. May leave the originals on - as it is just not worth the hassle anymore. Number plate is only aesthetic - although I am still convinced baffle out is safer for everyone.
