Came across these for the first time yesterday looking at a Yam, damn thing nearly took my leg off as it snapped up when I got on the bike!

Needless to say I'm not keen as yet... I presume the benefit is to ensure it's fully retracted rather than relying on the rider, so if that's the case can it be converted to a push up stand?

Or, am I missing the point entirely on it's purpose...?

I have one on the BMW K100RT project bike (I get bored quite easily and need something to tinker with) the bike weighs about 260KG, the first time I found out that the stand was sprung it almost squashed me!

I didn't know they put them on Yams.

Anecdotally, I've heard that Ducati used them as they could get a reliable kill switch for a traditional stand. If you've seen the wiring on their pre-2000 bikes this is believable. Why they couldn't just buy Japanese ones is beyond me.

My 916 has a self-retracting stand and I like the idea, one less thing to think about when you get on the bike and I can start the engine when and how I like, instead of doing the stand-down, clutch-in etc checklist.

I've never dropped my bike due to the stand retracting, I suppose numpties that sit on other peoples bikes might drop it though, but they'll get a shoeing if they drop mine punch

My 748SPS has a sprung side stand and I find it a PITA. I know it does it so it's not a problem for me, but I always worry someone will lean against the bike just enough to take the weight off the stand. It'll flip up and when they move away down it goes eek Never actually happened, just something I kind of see could happen. Although if it hasn't happened in the 10 years I've owned it then I'm obviously just being paranoid......again silly
I'd love to do away with the sprung stand and I'm sure someone was doing a conversion for the pre-2000 dukes, but I can't remember who scratchchin

The old man has one in his stable and it's terrible. Manouvering the thing into the small space in the garage, having to hold the stand down until it's fully level Grrr

The old VFR400's had the lambs foot rubber thing IIRC, you had to shoe that thing to make sure it was sat right before you got off the bike LOL
