Frank Thomas leathers

I've got some one piece Frank Thomas leathers that have armour in the shoulders,knee's ect but in the back piece there was this weird memory foam thing, is this just packing or armour? I've fitted the Knox protector from my other leathers just in case but it seems weird how some leathers are fitted with a backprotector and others aint.
