Hopefully sorted my 1st bike. Did the DAS in Sep07 and have been saving and waiting to break my 2 wheeled viriginty...

Buying a mates brothers 1998 S GSXR 600 in the ever so rare blue and white. It's got a few extras on it and a nice polished frame. It has a few marks here and there and needs a little TLC.

Need a new screen as the current one has a crack in it, a pair of tyres and an oil change.

But this led to a very nice price.

Will get some pictures up as soon as i get it, but for now I'm after tyre recomendations.

As a novice I don't want any that will take GP talent to warm up. So they'll need to be a nice all rounder.
Had a look at D208's and Sport Attacks as I can get these for around £100 for the pair, but having read through the archives they don't seem brilliant. A pair of Diablos are around £150 which I'm happy to pay but just want to know they're the right tyre for me???

Your advice is appreciated.

I've got a clear screen going if you want to make an offer? Mine is an X reg (99/00) 600 SRAD so dunno if it's the right one (best YOU check this out!)

As for the tyres, I don't think it would have made much difference to the 4000 miles I've done since passing last summer as you don't really start to feel comfortable enough to exploit a tyre's capabilities until (guesstimating for myself) somewhere over 6/7000. I had zero biking experience until I did the DAS & then went & bought the gixxer immediately I passed, so if you have been riding bikes a bit longer, maybe tyre choice will be a bit more important for you.

All IMO of course.

What tyres are you on atm? The issue is I don't want to get something thats going to be too advanced for me, ie I'll never get enough heat in them.

get some Micheline pilot road 2's (the 2CT ones)

http://www.michelin.co.uk/uk/front/act_affich.jsp?...

go steady on the road...even when it looks dry there is still a real lack of grip

keep it smooth and enjoy

Can get them for similar cost to the Diablos, so not too bad.

Will do. Going to do a bike safe once I've got a few miles under my belt.

Cheers for the tyre suggestion. wink

I'm using Diablo (rear)/Diablo Corsa (front) on the 916 and I like them but I'm a long-time Pirelli user, I tried the Diablo Corsa on the rear too which worked well but wore out a little too quickly.

Um....pass? Told you I was new! wink

The rear is....no, don't tell me......it's a...a...a...black round one! biggrin I can't remember off the top of me head tbh. It needed a new rear for it's mot, guy let me have one cheap as he'd ordered a set for someone that never came back. Got a feeling it's a Michelin of some description.

As for the heat thing......I weave back & forth for the half mile or so from my house to the first roundabout, more for peace of mind I guess as I don't think my lean angles are such to really warrant "warming the tyres"....but it can't hurt can it? smile

And as Y2 says, you can't take anything for granted where grip is concerned.

Weaving back and forth won't do a lot of good when riding on the road as you're not generating enough force or friction to create heat (and you look like a prat... wink ).
Better to just ride gently for the first few miles and let the tyres get up to temperature themselves before going banzai.

Pilot 2's are a really good compromise tyre in terms of grip, cost, mileage and wet weather performance, so are BT 021's.
