Dear all,

Link to my Spondon Triumph aka Spumph

http://www.spondonownersclub.co.uk/spumph.htm

Lets be honest any bike above 600cc is more than adequate for the road and standard bikes can be a little dull, that’s why a few people want to ride specials. Probably more than a few would like to own a special but they don’t have the ability to build them

I purchased the bike early 1998 and got my first MOT December 1998 but didn’t ride it until the summer of 1999. The bike was purchased as a rolling chassis no (engine, V5, lights, clocks or MOT).

The original engine was set up by Hobbsport Racing on their dyno approximately 98 bhp and 79ft lb torque and fitted a stage 3 Dyna jet kit and K&N filters. The fairing was modified by Waldron Motorcycles (Stockport) to accept a single NC30 headlight. I had the rear Ohlins rebuilt and a new spring fitted by a company in Leigh they also set up all the suspension for my weight (good value and made a big difference for riding on the road) the original spring was too hard for road riding ok for a race track. The current engine (Hobbsport tuned) has Daytona 750 cams and pistons, ported cylinder head, the balancing gear has been removed and the crank has been re-balanced around 118bhp at wheel.

I have decided that after many years of riding bikes it’s time to move on from bikes and I have decided to sell, but the big question is because it’s a special – what’s its value?

What do you think would be a fair price; obviously I am after as much as possible, I need to fund the Lotus Exige series 1

The bike was built and featured in PB Magazine, copies of all articles can be e-mailed.

Any ideas on value much appreciated.

Two and a half? Maybe put it up for three? Difficult to price something slightly unconventional

worst "come and get my bike" thread, ever

Thanks for the reply - not the response that I hoped for! Did hope that the PB magazine connection and professional build would have helped, this is a well know bike wherever it goes. Spondon only built four frames for this engine type. I dread to think of the build cost, stopped counting at £15,000.

Blimey... that looks lovely. I don't know if £3k is the right number or not but I think you will lose much of the money you've spent. Been there, done that rolleyes It's a bit like a Saville Row suit - a fabulous fit for the guy ordering it but worth a lot less to anybody else.

It’s a lovely bike but, like all things, it’s only worth what you can get for it! Why not do something like put it in MCN or Bike Trader with ‘offers’ and see what comes. You don’t have to sell it just because you’ve advertised it.

Obviously you've lavisehed a lot of love and care on it and it is a gorgeous bike.... but. Its an old-ish Triumph engine - albeit well looked after and upgraded. Yes it has Ohlins but then so has my Falco and its a £200 shock on the used market.

As for the custom frame - well you've got me there because I've never heard of them - but how much is it really worth in the used market against stuff like newer Trumpets or Ducatis etc? Maybe two and a half is a bit low on reflection but in all honesty I'd say add a grand to that and it would be in the ballpark.

I sold my nice Ex endurance racer Harris F1 on a Q plate for 4.5k and would be looking for the same if I was to sell my RGV500 special (When the engines rebuilt again) I would say 4.5k+ is on the ball for someone who appreciates The magnificent work of Spondon engineering, their work isstunning and I guess that a frame kit for the spumph would be 3.5k would it not.
Try performance bike magazine and the street specials club plus possibly Streetfighter magazine.
I recently bid on a Spondon RG500 that realised £4200 and it wanted stripping and rebuilding!
Good luck -sure it wont hang around for long.

Thanks for the replies; I was hoping that the professional build and PB connection may make it worth more, also two engines included standard and tuned.

I would have thought around £5k-ish, but you'd need someone who knew what they were getting. A Spondon should be around the same as a Harris, I would have thought (though I prefer the Spondon, myself), and they seem to go for around 5.

If I was in the market...

Sorry Paul- had some PC 'issues' and lost your email. Do you want to send it through again? I might be able to help- I'll forward it to my Brother and see if any of their magazines would be interested in a feature. Can't promise anything but more than happy to put you in touch.
