I have a 6" x 4" plate (2 lines of text) fitted and it doesn’t seem to cause any issues. I spoke to my MoT tester last year and he was of the opinion that as long as it looked like the right font, right background, right character spacing and the plate could be read at something like 20yds then he was happy.
May be posing in SP&TL to see if there are any more ‘official’ answers though.

my plate was slightly undersize and still perfectly readable
How undersize was it? The smallest font size you're allowed on a bike is 64mmSource: http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/leaflets/v796.pdf
PS ive just paid the fine over the phone ,spoke to a very nice sounding lady

now i have FULL size bill board one on it
if i get pulled again on that bike with a non-conformin plate i will have it taken off me and issued with a "Q" plate...that is what the officer that delt with me said
he said if it was his choice he would ignore it but he said his hands were tied ...new initiative set out buy the DVLA and police forces across the country total clampdown on all non conforming plates, albeit on a car or bike ,spacing or font style/size
at the end of the day it's your choice but i know what im doing now

also the full size legal plate has to have a BSI mark on it otherwise it's non-conforming
