Friday pm - Toseland to Get Pneumatic Yamaha by Estoril
Yamaha factory chiefs have promised their stunning new star James Toseland: You'll get our new pneumatic-valve engine by Estoril at the latest!
The dramatic pledge came at midnight in Qatar tonight after Toseland had blitzed into third place in the opening night's practising for Sunday's MotoGP on a bike that was nearly 10mph slower down the Losail circuit's 0.664-mile (1,068-metre) straight than the fastest machine on the track, Marco Melandri's Marlboro Ducati.
Toseland's Tech 3 Yamaha, which still uses a valve-spring engine, was also 5.407mph slower through the speed trap than the quickest Yamaha, the pneumatic-valve bike campaigned by Fiat Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo.
Toseland and his team-mate Colin Edwards are still using the 2007 valve-spring versions of the YZR-M1 engine, while Lorenzo and his factory team-mate Valentino Rossi benefit from the latest pneumatic technology. But after Toseland's storming performances during winter testing, climaxed by tonight's stirring third place, Yamaha now realise that they must back the 27-year-old Brit to the full. So he should receive the full factory engine at the third round of the 18-round series on the Estoril circuit in Portugal - and it may even come at the second round in Jerez in Spain.
"It's frustrating," Toseland said of his speed handicap as he stood in the Losail paddock at 1am. "But I'm just going to do the best with what I've got. It's just great to be where we are."
The speedtrap breakdown after tonight's session reads:
1st: Marco Melandri (Marlboro Ducati) 327.9kph (203.625mph)
6th fastest: Jorge Lorenzo (Fiat Yamaha) 321.0kph (199.341mph)
16th fastest: James Toseland (Tech 3 Yamaha): 312.3kph (193.938mph)
Comparing Toseland's best sector speeds against those of fastest lapper Casey Stoner, the Brit was only 0.09 seconds slower through T1, 0.121 seconds down in T2, and 0.096 seconds slower in T3. Only in T4, where the track opens up onto the power-sapping final straight, did Stoner increase his advantage to 0.189 seconds.

Tis going to be a good year hopefully ...Watched it on eurosport and its on again tomorrow at 8 and then Sunday at 8 too for the main event.
BB
Consider though that on Sunday the 125's and 250's start 5pm or so . . .BB
To see so many british riders on quality kit in their respective classes doing so well makes me so happy to have seen each of the racing in Britain over the years.
It has been a long time coming, and I so hope their race pace delivers results for them.
It will be very depressing to see JT duffed up down the straight every lap, yet on the other hand can you iamgine some of the passes he will make to not get left behind.
Smith, Webb and Redding's results are hugely impressive. Given Bradley and Danny know what the racing is like there is a real chance of a GP victory tomorrow for this island of ours . . .
