January 2008 Bike mag did a test of Yam FJR vs BMW GT vs BMW RT vs Honda Pan vs Kawa GTR.
Worth a read. All bikes came out well but the joint 1st position went to the BMW RT and the BMW GT.
3rd - ST
4th - FJR
5th - GTR
To be honest i read that test and think it bWorth a read. All bikes came out well but the joint 1st position went to the BMW RT and the BMW GT.

ks.There are a number of inconsitecies in it.
For me a touring bike is very personal and would reqiure many test rides for me to choose.
Test all the bike above and see what you think.
For me it would be either the BMW GT, Pan or GTR. With a leaning towards the GTR.

I fully agree (as I have said many times on here before and have said in the sticky at the top of the page) a test ride is the only real way to choose.Test all the bike above and see what you think.
The reports you see in the mags truly have no use at all.
They are altered and adjusted from the testers reviews , sometimes to the opposite view. This does happen .
One mag diluted their poor findings of a Ducati to suit the advertiser, but it wasnt enough , advertising revenue for the mag was pulled .
Top speeds and dyno outputs are sometimes printed without the bike even making the dyno or the track.
It truly is b
ks , go for the ride yourself , believe nothing that you read.

I have one and it is simply the best bike I have ever had. Does everthing and handles very well for its size, super comfy, great when its cold - heated seats and grips, massive luggage capacity with top box and paniers, plenty of space for pillians if that is important, huge tank range - will go well over 300 miles on a tank and really economical - runs at 55 mpg no matter how I ride it. I can't think of any other bike I'd rather have or need.
Simply superb!

As said before-it depends on the individual. It also depends on useage-trip distances etc. Most reports I've read seem to favour the big BMWs for long distance touring (continental etc) but it depends on your build, solo or two up & much more. Shaft drive also seems to be favoured for big miles-maintenance issue.
Just a few observations:
FJR. Brillaint motor, less so transmission, very top heavy and poor heat management. The latter issues did it for me.
R1200RT. Almost faultless except for not being terribly powerful.
K1200GT. Large, heavy, exceptionally quick and comfortable.
Pan. Too damn big!
GTR. Absolutely no knowledge other than it is the best looking of the lot
The good thing about Beemers are the accessories and aftermarket add-ons, which are unmached by any other manufacturer.

They are very nice, bet its a better tourer than the K1200GT.
I would want a CBR600 or something similar if i owned an RT just for those nice summer days.
Top bike.
