I passed my big bike test in January and have been riding for fun since, done maybe 1000 miles or so and I'm now thinking about doing a Ride Drive course. I've been looking at the full day advanced riders course and the first step advanced riders course (OCNL2) and I'd be wanting to do the course under 1:1 instruction.

My question is, has anyone done these courses, what are they like, what kind of level are you expected to be at when you show up and would it be wise to do one so soon after getting my licence? Granted, you don't know how I ride so it's a bit of a tricky question.

I'm can see it two ways. Firstly, that it would be best to get it in as soon as possible, get some training that's geared toward real world riding rather than focusing on getting through a test, have the benefit of being able to learn from a clean slate with no (or maybe a few but not yet ingrained) bad habits to get in the way. Plus the fact that I'd hate to put off the training and in 3 months time be in an accident that the training may have enabled me to avoid.

On the other hand though, I don't know whether I'd still be too green to really benefit from what I'd be told/shown. Learn to walk before you run and all that. With it being one on one training, I guess it could be pitched more to whatever level I'm at, but it would perhaps be a bit pointless if my novice riding was going to interfere with and hinder the course.

Uriel,

I would recommend a few more miles/months under your belt to really enjoy the course. As with any advanced course you need to be at one with what's going on beneath you, confident in the feel of your bike, so you can benefit from concentrating on what's going on around you. Advanced training is a big step up from DAS, although it's more similar than the step from L-car driver to advanced car driver.

I have been working for Ride-Drive as a bike and car instructor for over 5years. Please feel free to PM me if I can offer more advice
