Mentioned by Julian Ryder today, Kawasaki have uploaded a video clip from Jerez of their new Screamer engined MotoGP bike. Sounds fantastic and so much better than the big bang engines everyone has been using for the last few years.

Turn the volume up as well to get the full effect. smile

Remember when Kawasaki first came back into the MotoGP's?

The bike sounded like it was on the point of throwing it's guts lap after lap after lap.

Amazing.

Nothing like it since.

On another forum that was actually mentioned as possibly being a fake - check out the first scene, where the bike comes past and it freezes and shows "screamer" - it sounds like a bunch of F1 cars (there's definitely multiple engines!).

I'm not sure if the bit where the guy pulls away is a fake though, at the very least it's been carefully matched as the engine sounds do match where he pulls away and where he slows down for the corner.

I'm not 100% sure if the last scene matches or not either, doesn't really go on long enough to tell.

What is the difference between a "screamer" engine and "big bang" engine?

Don't believe them, they have been testing a screamer engine for quite a while now and this is a Kawasaki film.

Big Bang - fires two cylinders close together, followed by a long break, then the other two cylinders in close succession, then another long break before the cycle begins.

Screamer - fires its cylinders at regular intervals - one cylinder every 180 degrees of crank rotation

Also if I remember correctly Mick Doohan kept riding a Screamer engined GP500 Honda long after other Honda riders had gone to a Big Bang config engine.

Ah, so what are the supposed benefits of each? Is there a website that explains it?

Better traction, there is a bigger pause between pulses of power that allows the tyre to re grip.

Similar to a 2 cly engine aka Ducati.

Oh yeah, doesn't look fake now lol! I guess the video intended to have a different soundtrack at the start (where it sounds like there are multiple engines, but you only see one bike) - unless my hearing is going biggrin

i think it sounds like multiple engines partly due to the resonance on the track going past the grandstands...

Very much doubt any fakery if its on Kawasaki's own pages..

Certainly sounds ace.. I do keep my fingers crossed they have some good success with it. Be great to see 'Team Green' regularly on the podium.

(bit of a kwak fan at heart.. Sorry TL in the garage! biggrin )

Almost correct fwd.
It was Doohan with Honda that first came out with the big bang engine. It was reported that Doohan's bike had a strange engine note when it was heard in pre-season tests. I am not sure of the year, but Doohan may have already won a couple of championships.
When the season started, and Doohan kept blowing everyone else away, all the other teams wanted the same 'advantage' of the big bang engine. So they all scrambled to develop them.
This did two things. It threw the factories development into disarray and psychologically defeated the other riders who thought they were uncompetitive until they got the big bang bikes.
Once they all had the big bang engines, they discovered that they still couldn't beat Doohan, and he went back to the screamer.
I remember Doohan saying that the theories about the extra traction available with the big bang were all crap. Traction control is with your right wrist, as it was in those days.
