I'm looking for recommendations for a Waterproof jacket/Trousers. Problem is, they have to be used all seasons, which in winter means temps of around 12/13C, but in Summer around 30-35C with up to 100% humidity (Farkin hot/sticky - esp when it pours down and then the sun comes blazing out, as it does with regularity in summer)

I'm currently using a Berghaus gore-tex jacket/trousers, but these have absolutely no protection in them and its something I'm concerned about. Ok we don't do high speeds here - max 30-40 MPH which is well over the 22MPH speed limit but its fast enough that if I came off, the minimum I'm going to get is some nice roadrash...

Is there such a thing as a very lightweight gore-tex jacket/trousers with amour in them ? If there is which one is the best ?

I use the HG GTX Cruise kit. It's 100% waterproof in everything we've seen this year and has removable lining as well as vents for the summer.

My only reservation is the level of protection against impact when the lining is removed as they won't fit so tightly and will be thinner. I usually switch to leather jeans once winter's over though for that reason.

The HG GTX Cruise kit is very good at keeping you dry and warm or dry and cool (as required) but if you can afford it then the HG Master range offers all of that plus near leather like protection.

The other option is to get a leather suit that will fit under your current gear, giving protection from road and weather.

I picked-up the Spring 2008 copy of 'Ride' magazine yesterday. It's got a test on a number of textile suits. The HG Master came out best overall, though was let down in a burst test - which I read to mean that the built-in protection may not be held in place in a spill because the material around the protection may fail. Best Buy went to a Weise suit which cost less than half as much. There was also a review of a new leather suit from Rukka which claims to be waterproof and breathable - very pricey though.

i bought the Weise trousers recommended in RIDE magazine. they were pretty comfortable and warm on the ride down from harrowgate to leicester, and they kept me nice and dry on sunday during an unexpected downpour. I've not done that many miles on them yet though so can't really say any more, but i'm happy with them so far

Which Weise suit won?

I've got a set of Frank Thomas Force Aqua textiles and I'm looking to change as they by and large come dead last in every test they are in, I'm not confident in their ability to protect me in the event of a fall the stiching is not strong.

I had a Frank Thomas set and in a single 50mph unplanned ‘product evaluation’ test I unintentionally conducted last autumn I wore right trough the knee and ‘just’ down to my skin. I would suggest that they were only slightly better than heavy denim which looks like it agrees with the ‘more scientific’ tests that have been carried out elsewhere.
