Thought I would post this on this forum, I have already posted similar on Trackdays which was some help. Basically I am looking for a BS type A approved helmet, so that I can use it when I race(karts) and for road use on my bike.

Kart helmets are now mostly Snell 2005 approved which aren't permitted on the road, and bike helmets mostly EC approved and not permitted for MSA race meetings.

So far I have found a Suomy helmet that is type A approved, does anyone know of any other helmets that I can buy?

Any help much appreciated, thanks

BS Type A rating is functionally equivalent to ECE 22.05 the european union standard. All road legal motorcycle helmets in the uk will either be legal with BS Type A or ECE 22.05 markings on them.
Snell rating is not recognized as legal for road use in the UK or EU.

I was under the impression that the old British Standard was actually a bit tougher than the EU standard in terms of penetration of the helmet. see Ride magazines test of helmets on their website.

Bugger you meanI needn't have splashed out on a new Arai to do my cbt and das when my bs type a/af lid would have done.... doh...

Edited to say

The guy in the bike shop was a bit scathing about the eec test being almost worthless comapired to the old bS one.. There was a thread on here pointing to the new tougher graded tests but it escapes me at the mo...

I was amazed to see lids from 34.99, and no I didnt buy one I spent more than that on a cycle helmet !!!

Perversely Ride found that some of the £30 helmets was more protective that a whole load of £300 helmets from well known manufacturers.

Thanks for all your comments, Type A helmets are clearly to a good standard which is a good reason to use them for both road and track.

Question is, does anyone know who still makes them to this standard, and where to buy??

cheers,
John
