Hey all just wanted to share,

I love and respect my girlfriend (gay I know) anyway I've brought up the subject of learning to ride a bike several times and usually with the same results, I don't want you to die, those things are death-traps etc... and I wouldn't act against her wishes on this matter.

Last night we got to talking I told her I was feeling a bit down etc... she said she thought I was stuck in a rut and maybe I should do a course or something, I said the course I wanted to do she wouldn't let me, she took exception to this and asked me what it was. I said I wanted to learn to ride a bike. To my absolute amazement and delight she said ok. To say I was stunned would be an understatement as my OH makes the health and safety people look dangerous.

After our initial chat I re-assured her that I will be taking this very seriously and that yes it is dangerous and thats why I want to invest in proper tuition and acquire the skills I need, rather than just buying a bike and trying to teach myself. So theory test first and then lesson number 1 biggrin

I had honestly resigned myself to never getting on a bike, and it upset me, and my girlfriend has made my month by agreeing to this, maybe I'll take one lesson and decide its not for me (but I doubt it) but at least this way I'll know rather than always wondering.

Wahoo!!!!! biggrin

Well done (although I'd have just got one anyway) smile

I'd give it a couple of lessons before deciding if it's for you or not. I imagine it can be quite daunting stepping onto a bike for the first time, so you need to master the basics and get a decent feel for it before deciding.

Good luck with it and I'm sure you'll love every minute.

Yeah I am a little nervous, but more excited than anything else, theres so much to learn and enjoy its a whole new hobby biggrin Don't worry I'll definitely be giving it more than one lesson because I'm sure the first one will be more nerves and fear than anything else. Definitely want to get my full licence and then see if buying a bike is for me.

I did consider just getting one anyway but the girlfriend said she'd leave me if I did, and she meant it. Its just taken this long for her to come around.

It may currently be a "whole new" hobby.

It will terribly quickly become your only hobby. Then your only obsession. Then the only reason you can find for doing anything. You'll look back and remember the carefree days of having a girlfriend, and not really caring if it rained at weekends.

You'll love it.

What is it with everyone letting their other halves decided what they do with their lives? Why do you need your girlfriends permission? I really don't understand this attitude! smile

Quality!!

Glad the OH agreed. However I am a tiny bit concerned that you had to wait for permission in the first place...Hmmm, I suggest we'll get back to that later. So, CBT booked yet? Come on man, the green light was last night wasn't it? Oh, hang on....late night was it??!!

Good luck.

Good for you mate, having a supportive partner makes a world of difference! My wife is really supportive of me getting into biking, but I still haven't told my folks yet though - dreading that more than anything else.

Get the CBT and theory test booked asap smile

Amusingly it was the Wifes suggestion I learn to ride a bike... as she had been riding big bikes for four years biggrin

Nows the time to do it, they're changing the way you learn soon and will have to go to regional centres.

Inclusive package deals from bike schools are well worth it as you can hire a bike from them so you don't need the expense of buying a bike first, and once you've passed your test you're going to probably going to want something different to what you think you want now.

Will seem a long way off I know - but it won't be long til you pursuade the OH to get on the back of the bike, and then another little while and she will want to pass her test as well!

It will soon become hobby number 1!

I'm glad for you that you managed to sort it out with everyone happy.
I'm very lucky, my boyfriend has been riding bikes for 30 odd years anyway so its a hobby we enjoy together, in fact that's how I met him.
I have only had a bike for a couple of years so his help and experience really helps me.
