Hire a Harley or something else USA trip
Discussion
Hello
Me and a mate are of the Vegas in October we got 5 days touring planned.
My riding experience is varied RD350 CX500 GT550 Gpz900 K750
My mates is a little more limited to sports bikes.
He seems keen on going for a Harley and I spose given the location it does seem right.
I am just concerned that being a bit lardy the harley may not suit. There are other options BMW or Goldwing(even hore lardy)
What are your views
Cheers

Me and a couple of mates hired some harleys when we were in vegas last october and it was one of the best bits of the trip, three of us had v-rods and one had a heritarge softtail. we only had them for 2 days, and if your planing on doing big miles the v-rod might not be what your looking for (small tank, quite a bit of wind blast). two of us hired from www.escapeeagles.com, they were very good and they do different types of bikes to. and the other 2 got theres from www.lasvegasharleydavidson.com. Youve got to ride the valley of fire national park aswell. We had all only ridden sports bikes before and all got on ok with the bikes so this should be no problem.
I did this a couple of years ago. Hired the full dressed Electroglide. Sat on the freeways with the cruise control set listening to the radio/CD. Made a real change from the sportsbike back home. Will do the same again as it's great to just cruise and have loads of luggage space.
As for hiring the bike our UK bike license is sufficient.

Me too a few years back. I had a Fat Boy for a couple of days and loved it. It was slow and ran out of fuel (in the middle of the desert) within a few minutes of the reserve light coming on but it totally suited the location. I have great memories of the desert roads and cruising down the strip. I think you should just go for the American Dream unless you're really touring.
Hired a V-rod special last year...not in Vegas though, you just need your normal bike licence and may be asked for your pasport. A credit card for (hefty) deposit and some may ask for experience on larger bikes.
There's a place in Vegas that hires Ducati 1098 and other sports bikes, but if you are a little on the larger side then a Harley is built just for you, and they make perfect sense in the US..
Good luck and have fun.

I did route 66 last year, and all was arranged through HC TRavel www.hctravel.com who arranged all bike hire through EagleRiders.
I rode a Heritage Softail, which only had 4 miles when I picked it up. They have an outlet in LV, and I believe they are the largest single buyer of Harleys, so have a good relationship with Harley dealers, should anything go wrong.
If you are ever thinking of doing Route 66, I cannot recommend David at HC highly enough.
When you ride like this, you really get what Harleys are all about.
