i looked for the same thing when i was 15

problem comes that for anything reasonable you need a good budget as the old sports peds are not cheap!

i ended up on a modern crosser style 50 which i derestricted - was just a washer in the exhaust!!
30 then became 55

before i get flamed i realise that it was illigal and ment i was technically riding with out a valid licence and everything that comes with that however when it was resticted i couldnt get up hills at more than 15mph which lead to irritated drivers behind making dodgy overtaking manouvers and i decided that this was more dangerous than me having a few more mph

i know not everyone will agree with this but everyone i knew with a ped was derestricted

if you do want an old one for it to be legally capable of going above 30 i believe it must be pre 1986 and have its pedals still attached and able to function.

Actually it's Sept 1978. The last "Super Mopeds" were "R" suffix. From "S" they had to be restricted. You should be able to get hold of a "project" bike for £500 to £1000 depending how close it is to original and/or completion

Not particularly old but well worth a try if it's not too far away.

(Possible quick profit maker, would be tempted if i was anywhere near, must be worht double up and running).

Looks alright, doesn't it? The size of the main exhaust is funny - I think my water pipes are a bigger bore than that hehe

Some ideas on parts prices here:

Don't look too bad, although you'll not know what it needs until it's stripped down.

Sports Mopeds, as in FS1E and Fantic Chopper, etc., are very expensive now.
I just sold a restored Garelli Tiger Cross for £2200.

That's NOT a AP50 and being "T" Prefix is restricted. Looking at Yamaha FS1E reveals a one in the West Midlands for £750 that needs an MOT.

Why spend that much on a bike so old that is still a 50. I know its cheap for a fizzy but you would be better off buying my DNA (but its automatic) which is quicker, looks better, handles better, stops quicker and will be more reliable.

Looks, handling and stopping I'll give you. It isn't quicker and as for reliability The FS1E is Japanese and the DNA Italian, Nuff said!!

My DNA hasn't been too bad. Exhaust has needed spraying too often and I had a problem where a wire had burnt out in the connector block that goes into the back of the clocks. This could happen to any bike. Its done well being ridden flat out 80% of the time for a year with no major faults. My DT125 on the other hand was nothing but trouble when my brother first bought it. I'm not sure one would be quicker either. My bike is standard but any running fizzy is gonna be pretty old and probably done quite a few miles as well. My DNA will do 50-55 tucking down on the flat and regularly see 62 downhill and once got 64 down a VERY big hill.

The engine is pretty bulletproof and with Modern synthetic oils and better Spark plugs it will run forever.

I have never been overtaken by any DNA over 30. You may have a de-restricted one which is a big no-no. However if you want to go down that road why bother with a DNA?? Find an RS50.

Because its alot more comfortable, nearly as quick as an RS on acceleration and they get an extra 5mph top end. I can also fit my helmet under the tank and its cheaper to buy, run and insure. I didn't wand to be changing gear every 2 seconds either.

Isn't it illegal to ride a derestricted bike if you're not old enough or don't have the right licence?

I don't mean that preachily, but wouldn't you be just as well buying a bigger, more powerful bike in first place? Driving w/o licence or insurance carries the same penalty, I would have thought, and you might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb?

Or am I missing something?

It is illegal but do you really expect us to slow to 15mph up hills and 30 flat out? What's more dangerous, keeping up with traffic or getting in its way? To legally do over 30mph on a moped it has to take a test to become a motorcycle and needs stuff like number plate lights. Even with a full licence riding a moped over 30 is breaking the law.
