As some of you will know, an 848 is on the list for my potential next bike - and it's high up the list. It'll probably be what I will test ride first, followed by the other options.

I was looking at my local Ducati dealer's website and found that they are now doing their own "848S" - wonder if the factory will ever follow suit?

http://www.snellmotorcycles.com/848Snell%20Perform...

Looks like it would be just under £12k, with Ohlins forks and Ohlins rear shock, with some carbon fibre mudguards thrown in as well.

Well outside of what I want to spend on my next bike (cannot spend more than 10k to change, would ideally like to spend a little less) - but what do you lot think of the idea of an 848S?

I guess the Ohlins upgrade is worthwhile, but I personally wouldn't go for the carbon fibre bits - would prefer a set of Termis myself! biggrin

That's about 2-3k above the standard 848 isn't it? For me...I probably wouldn't go for it, if that's what it gave. I am not good enough to be able to use what's been upgraded, IMO, so it would be a waste of money...

Are the parts going to add anything significant to your enjoyment of riding the bike? Are you riding at a standard such that you're pushing the limits of a standard 848? Are you wanting something a little more flash to pose with?

If the answer to any of the above is "yes" then why not go for it, otherwise a regular 848 would probably be more than enough fun smile

Now I'm no maths genius, but you wannt spend MAX 10k....and the 848s is £12,500. Hmmmm.....!!!

Seriously though, ride the 1098...you'll HAVE to have one! I rode both, and whilst the 848 was very nice, it's not a 1098.

I'm not suggesting that I would go for the 848S, just mentioning it and starting some chat about it smile

I guess a 1098 (particularly as you can get them on 0% finance at the moment) would be great if you aren't worried about not having an 1198, but that would be way more bike than I can handle at the moment! wink

I've got upto 10k to spend when I come to change, plus my Hornet (worth something around the £2500 mark) in part exchange. Assuming that the Duke does win the "next bike" competition, then I'd probably go for the standard 848 and maybe add some Termis plus a few extras like crash bungs, tank paint protection, etc.

If my replacement bike ends up costing less than that (say, if I was to go for a CBR600RR or GSXR) then it's money left in the bank offsetting my mortgage - good in some ways, not good in others....

I know some people say that the Ohlins are worth the extra on the 1098S; wonder if that would translate to the 848S? As has been said though, 12k is very close to the price of the 1098 - maybe it's destined to be a niche conversion....?

You can have my mint 848 with Termi's Sossige!!................................Thts's if I go for the Monster 1100S! Tempting. ummmmm!

I can't imagine I'm any where near being man enough for a 1098 let alone the 1198! My minerals are no where near big enough, as for my ability. Good but not great!

Cheers for the offer, but I think that if I was to buy an 848 I'd like to own it from new - just so it was all mine biggrin

Have you got any videos of your bike with the Termis fitted? I'd love to hear/see it and I'm sure I wouldn't be alone wink

Just browsing the ducati wolverhampton site and they have a couple of 1098s with just over 1k mile on them for 11k and a new one for 14k and a 1098r for 20 ( oh yes and a desmosedici (sp) for 40k)

so 12k for a non official 848s seems a bit pricey although bike bits do seem to add up quickly...

if it was me and I was looking at an 848 id be tempted by this 08 one...

nicely run in at 2k miles and at 8 grand gives plenty for some termi's some carbon, new leathers, and a track bike !!!

I think my second ducati is going to be either an older monster or a 750/ 900 supersport circa 95.. mmm or a track bike, mmm or a hyper <LOL>

I think I actually prefer this one

http://www.ducatiwolverhampton.com/viewbike.asp?SP...

obviously paint the number borders and the carbon front fender red Im not keep on the race rep look..

to me the 916 look is the classic of my generation as is the 355 & 550 donkey.. and the 90's tvrs..

G

It was quite scarey in there yesterday the amount of bikes they had over 10 K they had one hyper 1100s list at 9.6k with about another 3k of carbon bits on it yikes

Doesn't sound like it affects you, but for others...I'm not sure about this particular 0% offer, but previously Ducati were asking for a 50% deposit (i.e. would only do 50% of the bike on 0% finance). Not sure if that's the case here but worth mentioning!

Sos if you go for a Duc then you have to have the Termis! they're the doggies mate.
I went out with a few mates when I'd first passed my test, One of the lads passed me like I was stood still and I was doing a slightly daft speed.
His 996sps sounded so sweet as he passed I was almost saddened to hear my IL4 overtake the cacophony of music that were the twin Termis.

Me too, i had an original 916 Strada in mint condition a few years back. Should never have sold it.

Bit confused with that bike though as they describe it as a biposto, but it's got a single seat. It looks like a genuine R, but is it just made to look like an 998R?
Beautiful bike though. I remember buying my 916 back in '02/'03 from Ducati London, (just off A1M north - Volvo dealership now).
Anyway, they had a couple of 998R's on display on bike racks. Bloody gorgeous.
Such a classic shape. Though 'ironically' we have to thank Honda for some of the stylin cues...I think it was a certain NR750 which influenced heavily it's design.

Its not a Genuine R but has been upgraded using genuine R parts into a replica.. So may have been a biposto originally hence the description. It did look nice but I'd prefer it if it didnt have the 998 R logos on it.. as even if its an exact replica down to the con rods its not actually an R..

looks even better in the flesh

With refference to wanting the Ohlins on a bike, i'd say its worth regardless of ability ! I've only owned a hornet and a 636ninja and had the pleasure of riding a Duke with full ohlins on some farmilier roads and couldn't believe the difference ( big smile)
Obviously when you factor in the fact i had been riding my ninja which is like chalk and cheese to a 998R i'm sure it helped with the experience.. but going by that experience i woulld do what ever i could to get a ducati with ohlins.....
