Yoshimoto Slipitin. After every ride, removal, clean and inspection once a month or after a long trip. My drag bike chains get replaced after every weekend.

Agreed.

Can we have a 'wiki' or whatever these things are called for chain lube, as it pops up every two months hehe

I'm going to hijack this thread..., but it is on this subject...

the dealer I bought my bike from put a new chain on the bike before I bought it and have treated it in some kind of strange wax. What is the best way to clean this off before putting some dry lube on it (which I have bought). I am doing about 250 miles a week... so want to make it a weekend job to lube the chain up.

Thanks!

Fit a scott oiler (other products are available), top it up every thousand miles or so and check the chain tension every 3 or 4 thousand. Much less hassle.smile

Smart ass!... would I need to take the chain off to do this... or can it be done in situ?

Another vote for Wurth here and every couple of hundred miles.

I have just been a tart and bought a red Ducati chain so I when that goes on I think I will be polishing it every day!

I usually use Muc Off chain cleaner.

Anything thats in the shop "O" ring safe(which it seems all are now).

I dont do it at a certain mileage period, just a small spray at the end of every ride, next to no fling and the chain is ready for the next outing.

If your heading away on a longer trip, look out for the small "travel" sized aerosols .

No need to remove anything, you just need to be able to rotate the back wheel to clean all of the chain.

Just get the bike up on centre/paddock/abba stand.

Get some paraffin and brush it all over the chain/sprockets, make sure your cleaning the whole thing and not just the sides.

Get some rags to clean all the black st off everything, repeat both steps and eventually it should be pretty damn clean.

Dry chain and go for a short spin to warm it up, then apply lube making sure you get it into the O-rings.

Ok.. understood all of that apart from what an O ring is......

also.. have some small surface rust appearing (Bloody Kawasakis! :P).... is it worth sticking some ACF-50 on these parts (after giving the bike a good clean)

Am going down to Hein Gericke tonight to pick up a few bits and bobs... so currently have chain cleaner on the list and need to know if ACF-50 needs to go on it as well!

I have heard good things about the Wurth dry stuff, but last time I purchased chain-lube I just bought what the dealer uses, which is Putoline something or other.

AFAIK ACF-50 shouldn't go on the chain, but I could be wrong.

O ring is the red bit in this diagram. Be sure to clean and lube in there.

Should be able to clear the surface rust by cleaning it if hasn't been there too long.

I wouldn't put acf 50 on my chain, but do use it on my forks etc.

biggrin

As above, no need to remove, just be able to spin the rear wheel and give it a good spray

If it's reeeeally crappy, removing it and giving it a good bath and scrub in parrafin may be easier, and cheaper given the price of both the lube and the cleaner...

Don't bother buying chain cleaner from HG.

You can get a 4 litre bottle of paraffin from B&Q etc for £5.
