Just read Performance Bikes launch report on the Yam R1 and despite the big 170+ bhp power claims they talk of about 140bhp at the back wheel. Thing is that is the same as a GSX-R!

Anyone ridden one of the big 2004 bikes and got a view?

Leagues above said MOTO mag, I quote- " power above 8k is like no other production bike untill now, gsxr-1000 included"

And Ride mag said- "if you think a gsxr-1000 has got a lot of top end shove, wait till you try this"

Oh and 106 mph in 1st, 131 in 2nd, 154 in 3rd, 176 in 4th!!! 'ecking flip max top whack of my trusty old Bandit in 2nd!

Aye & indeed carumba!!

I have just ridden home on a 2004 R1, and I would say it's faultless.

But I guess that would be true of the other 3 too.

Brand loyalty and looks are surely all that will determine your choice...

And a trustworthy dealership who will maintain it properly for you!

It is going to be a LOT faster than a 2000 R1 is all I can tell you . For now it blinks at me in horror when I have had it up to 7,000rpm so I can't give any absolutes yet.

Red- its the new blue...

And on to the K5 GSXR! Reports in this weeks MCN and today's (Sat the 19th's) driving supplement with the Telegraph.

Just out of interest, here is a dyno chart of a '04 ZX10 with an Akrapovic, my K3 with a yoshi, Phatgixxer's K3 (Angus) with his 106 dB yoshi and a std K5 (from fast bikes March 05).
Mine is in for a 4000 mile service at Crescent next week so we'll see if it matches the 165 bhp atrw now it is run in!

....and here is the 165bhp (rear wheel) baby. Power commander, free flow air filter and Yoshi tri oval end can the only mods. Pretty good power eh? 7lb feet more torque than the ZX10R too....

Gixxers are still the benchmark and deffo the naughtiest of the bunch. Just something about their attitude.

I've got an '04 Blade.... it's not the fastest but it's a fantastic all rounder - distance and track I like her cos she does exactly what I want - I reckon the new Gixx would eat her for brekkie (but NOT in the looks department!!)

The regular trackdayers that I go away with have a mixed selection of bikes & the Kawasaki ZX10 rocked last year!! it went stupidly fast & kicked several 04 R1's right up the jaxx!

Just been at Nogaro for a week and can confirm that the K4 gixxer will kill an 04 R1. They are mental at the top end (std bike, apart from a tri oval yoshi can). Have also ridden (& crashed) Paul's bike (ZX10 in the dyno plot below) and can confirm it pulls like a train. The 04 R1 does not steer very quickly unless you can jack the rear ride hight up at least 5mm. My old 2000 tricked-up R1 felt a lot quicker for what it's worth and also handled better. (the new R1 has diff fork springs and a resprung ohlins rear shock).

Fergus, did you mean a K5? I thought the '04 R1 (and '04 Blade) was a match for the K3/K4 depending on riders. The ZX was then supposed to be better than all of them on a track. Phatgixxer and I certainly weren't troubled by anything last year including the instructor on his race prepped (+slicks) GSXR 600.

PS - Here the bike that can stick to Phatgixxer's ar5e with 10 less bhp (but a better power to weight ratio......from the carbon fibre stuff!! hehehehe)

NordS, 2 things,.

the first is I let you you stay with me as you were armed with a vid camera and second it was before the power commander and air filter mod...

Also the difference the Brembo master cylinder makes to the brakes is stunning.

I would remind the assembled that in the last session I did pull out half a lap but then I binned the fecker!

Also the difference the Brembo master cylinder makes to the brakes is stunning. It was only partly your skill which meant you closed me down on every corner.

I would remind the assembled that in the last session I did pull out half a lap while you filmed the VFR800 but then I binned the fecker as you weren't looking after me! Cheers for making sure I got home though!

Oh fair enough Angus....

Whilst Crescent carried out the 4K service yesterday, I had a go on their k5 demo (only for people with a K5 on order!!!! but the JR rep was ticket enough)

Initial thoughts are it was comfortable, very thin, no more powerful than mine (a5se-dyno, more commonly known as hold 5K in first and wack it open and see how high it lifts, followed by the same in 2nd) and god does it make a row! The induction is noise is pure MotoGP from about 6K onwards. A real 'hammerjack' type noise! It also felt more peaky than mine. Many magazines have said how rideable it is, but I preferred my K3 on the road but that could be familiarity (ie I'm used to it).

More later!

Well after the test ride yesterday, thoughts?
