I test rode a 998 several years ago and was very impressed. Didnt buy it as it was scruffy and overpriced.
I beleive that it was a big improvement on the 996 , but can anyone tell me more ? Was the Std Spec, Ohlins Rear and Showa Front, ? Some Examples have a White Section on the Nose Fairing and Tailpiece which i much prefer , is this a Factory colour scheme ?

Also problems and recalls etc ?

Also how much of an improvement was the 1098 and what are they like to ride ? What is the spec , problems , recalls etc

Any info much appreciated

Lots of stuff on this. Suggest you start the Ducati Sporting Club website and ask questions there. 996/998 very similar (1996-2002), 1098 (2007-)a different kettle of fish entirely. White number boards mean nothing, they're 8p in Fleabay. Old Dukes last well if they have been looked after, if they are abused they will cost you more to run than a hot hatch. You have missed off the 999 which was the model in between (2003-2008). I suggest some reading in the right places first.

IIRC, 998 S had full Ohlins, the white number boards were fitted to the SPS.

And if my memory serves me right, the 998 was the first of the testrastretta engines .

ohlins - you can write a book about them.............

in my opinion you'd do far better getting the suspension set up for you by Maxtons or others..........they do it to your weight / riding style / preferences and type of use........etc

ohlins do come with flashy coatings hat appeal to rich /stupid ducati owners

A 999s does indeed have full Ohlins wink

There is a big difference between the 998 and 1098, my friend has both, he keeps the 998 for what he consider's it's classic looks and styling, but the 1098 is a much more serious piece of machinery and a complete evolution from the 998.

To be honest I think you will be more constrained by budget as there will be a big difference in price between them.

The 1098 is much more modern and will be much more reliable.

You should check out Ducatisti for more info.

I can bang a long post up tomorrow if needed have a book on all the specs on every Ducati Superbike but currently i m ready to get my head down.

I used to listen to stupid opinions like gr88 before I finally made the jump for a Ducati, I have owned 3 and all have been great. Went to Monaco on my current steed last year and TT this year regular used to trips away and its great.

The 996 is grunty but much more revy at the top my SPS has a slight powerband at the top so still needs working but obviously not like a 750 4 Cylinder.

The 998 has a lazy grunty pull but again they are great bikes I always wanted an SPS after Fast Bikes vids and World Supers.

If your after ohlins then rear shock is on the S versions if your after full ohlins then 996 SPS or 998R both are fecking gorgeous. I ve owned my bike since 2005 and love it to bits on the flat out runs in South of France 1 litre 4s obviously went but on the N85 she held her own, its not what you ve got its how you use and all that good stuff.

Mine makes about 125bhp 998R 136 bhp I believe standard 996 112 bhp.

As for 1098 I personally would not want one have been out on a test ride but still slightly jap feel to it obviously more power lighter but you ll get useda to what you own.

The shape of 916 series is awesome even in Monaco people were coming over and commenting how nice she was. Ace get one you ll love it service history a must.
Edited to add also 996R has full Ohlins in and also the 998 engine.

Which bit is coated? mine are older than that (but not on a 'cati) and apart from a sticker wearing off due to a pillion's boot there is no real sign of age.

Think he might be referring to the anti stick gold coating on the front forks. If your pillion's boot is wearing this off you might wish to address riding style.

The 1098 for me was lovely to ride but still felt Japanese by that I mean easy to get on with but also not as well finished as the 996/998, cheap plastic here and there. I ve heard a few others say this as well.

However a great bike and i ve no doubt you ll enjoy it with no problems and 7.5 k intervals on servicing I believe.

My SPS is nearly 11years old still mint and been used every chance I get, as for the comments on the Ohlins never had any issues that includes a 748s I owned as well. Normally people slate Ducatis who haven t owned one.

Like I said SPS is revy in nature but plenty of grunt. I love it was debating a 996R but dont know after all the experiences i ve had on my bike if I could part with her.

Last few services have been expensive but thats including tyres, last one was 800 pounds.

I ve brought all the magazines when the SPS was launched Fast Bikes raved about them. Spoke to Gary Mason at Silverstone and he was saying what fun he had on the N85 on one.

They literally are amazing to own after 5 years of ownership I still go in the garage at winter and cant believe how nice they look.

Get one mate just make sure service history in tact and shes been well maintained.

If you are considering either look at the 999. 998's are getting too old and the 1098/1198 are strong money.

The 999, although short lived is a fantastic machine and you cant beat it for its marmite looks.

I have literaly just brought a 999s which has ohlins forks, shock & steering dampner along with full termignoni system. That was around the 7k region. All that bling for that price and its the newer deep sump version with radial calipers.

998 are too much of a collector item now and uber expensive for well speced bikes. MCN (i know not real journalism) have a video on youtube where they tested a 999 back to back against the 1098 and they couldnt make the money difference work when looking at the 999 v's 1098.
