Showtime For Bikers At The NEC

A two-wheeled tour of Motorcycle Live with PHer Rick Cuthbert

Kawasaki: ZX10-R is top of the 'must see' list
Kawasaki: ZX10-R is top of the 'must see' list
While the UK may be left wanting for a proper motorshow at present, the motorcycling community has been treated to a resurgent event at the NEC in Birmingham. The Carole Nash Motorcycle Live show (to address it by it's proper name) featured much for bikers to get excited about, with almost every motorcycle and scooter available on sale in the UK on display, along with concept bikes and eagerly anticipated new machines yet to hit showroom floors.

Kawasaki: Z1000SX
Kawasaki: Z1000SX
Top of the 'must see' list for show-goers was the new ZX-10R from Kawasaki. In the world of sportsbikes, everything has to be lighter, faster, and more powerful than anything that has gone before, and the new Kawasaki is just that. Knocking on the door of 200bhp, this beast has the numbers to beat the current top-dog, the BMW S1000RR. Kawasaki have a reputation for building bikes that bite back, but the new generation of ZX-10R is available with traction control and ABS so should make the bike accessible and rideable even for mere mortals. The ZX-10R is yours for £11,699. Kawasaki also displaye the new Z1000SX designed to combine plenty of 'sport' with a useful helping of 'touring' thrown in, and the retro-styled W800.

Ducati showed off a controversial but undoubtedly striking new machine called the Diavel. Long lines of show-goers queued up to sit on the bike and make 'brum-brum' noises, although opinion on whether Ducati should make cruisers is divided. This is the Porsche Cayenne of the motorcycle world, and has upset a few Ducati die-hards, but with a claimed 162bhp from the 1,200cc v-twin, it seems unlikely to be anything other than massive fun to ride. The preposterous 240 section rear tyre is virtually unheard of, but it gives the bike a unique presence and rock-hard looks, and hopefully an opportunity to lay some of that power down to the tarmac. The Diavel is due to retail at £12,995.

Ducati: Diavel
Ducati: Diavel
MV Agusta: F3
MV Agusta: F3

There is no such controversy over the new MV Agusta F3. The stunning new sportsbike has all the timeless good looks of its stablemate, the F4, but features a new 675cc 3-cylinder engine punting out about 135bhp. It's not the fastest, the biggest or the best, but it really is a machine to lust after, and at approximately £10,000, MV is sure to shift as many as they can make.

Triumph has two new machines certain to have a big impact on the UK bike market. Most conspicuous is the new Triumph Tiger 800, which offers real around-the-world ability with a new 800cc triple engine. This bike is aimed squarely at the BMWs currently dominating the market for this type of machine, and early reports suggest it is as capable as it looks. Triumph plan to sell the new Tiger for £7,149. Triumph is also showcasing the revised Speed Triple, controversially ditching the trademark twin round headlights, and replacing them with a squintier look that brings the Triple up to date, but loses a little of the original's charm.

Triumph: Tiger...
Triumph: Tiger...
...and Speed Triple
...and Speed Triple

Honda didn't have any headline-grabbing new sportsbike on show, but they did have the new CBR600F, which combines a seemingly perfect mix of sporting ability and everyday comfort. This bike has been labelled a 'hornet in a frock', but to everyday bikers looking for a bike that will do-it-all, it must be a very tempting prospect. Honda is also showing the strange-looking VFR800X, which resurrects the VFR 800cc V4 and gives it an odd, but not unpleasant new home in a 'big trail bike' chassis. This combination turns the VFR from a sports-touring bike into just a plain touring machine, but could make a lot more sense given the other bikes in Honda's current line up.

Honda: CBR 600F...
Honda: CBR 600F...
...and VFR 800X
...and VFR 800X
Yamaha: Diversion 600F
Yamaha: Diversion 600F
Suzuki: GSR 750
Suzuki: GSR 750

Yamaha brought along two new street bikes - the 800cc Fazer and the 600cc Diversion F. Neither bikes will write headlines, but both look like worthy choices for riders looking for capable all-rounders. Suzuki brought the new GSR 750, a bike built in a similar vein to the new Yamahas.

BMW: K1600GT
BMW: K1600GT
BMW presented the new K1600 GT, and it continues a tradition of huge continent-crushing touring bikes, but this time boasting an all-new 6-cyliner engine that looks certain to give the new machine extremely long legs and a smooth power delivery.

Dirt-experts KTM had the usual bewildering line-up of off-road machines, but there was also a revised RC8, which although cosmetically familiar, features updates designed to improve rideability. But of most interest on the KTM stand was the stunning new 125 Duke, which brings previously unseen levels of quality and desirability to the learner-legal category. Any 17-year-old that gets this bike from Santa this year must have been a very good little boy indeed.

KTM: The 125 Duke
KTM: The 125 Duke
The show gave non-bikers the opportunity to try motorcycling for free with the (thankfully indoors) Get On scheme, and a quality live show added a whiff of full-throttle action. With all the new metal on show, seemed to be a successful recipe - and a great platform to build on for next year.

not a bad show - a lot under one roof, and I managed to get a very good deal on a jacket and some gloves.

Was a great oppertunity to have a sit on so many bikes- i got to work out what suits my size / frame. Went there thinking a ninja was for me, but came away dreaming of a speed triple- it just fitted my shape like a glove

I'm not at all opposed to more motorbike coverage on PH; it's a nice punctuation from all the car stories. Don't like the new Speed Triple; give me the 2009 model Speed (actually Street would be fine) Triple in that bright green with the little body coloured hood over the lamps and the body coloured underbody kit.

Quite like the MV Augusta, but a few weeks ago I was driving through the Yarra Valley and was behind two mates, on on a Duke 1098 (in red of course) and the other on a 2005 F4 (red on silver). Aside from the glorious glorious noise, I'd say a 2005 F4 has to be the best looking faired bike ever.

^ Agreed. Stunning.

The Kwak isn't a looker but I still can't wait to get a ride. I'll be completely honest though, I'm more excited about the Diavel boxedin

I can't wait to try one.

We had the same discussion at the NEC, the old MV F4 is a design classic.

But for me the show winner was the Morton Cafe racer, they've managed just the right combination of retro looks and modern running gear, well done the brits!!

I'm just being fussy here but the Z100SX pictured is actually a normal Z1000 in 2011 colours.

The Z1000SX looks like this

And in touring guise

Sorry for being a fussy git!

Nice to see bikes on PH though!

Agree that the F4 is a classic, but I've always thought that the back end is a bit too big. The F3 might be the perfect update, will need to see more pics!

Im just looking at the pics of the Z1000 and it appears to have gone from being a factory built street fighter to a faired in sports tourer. bit of a shame really

They do both, the Z1000 is the current daddy of the naked bikes and this Z1000sx will sit beside it as the faired model.
