Okay, I am preparing to be slated for being a traitor...

I have recently bought a Sylva Striker with a GPZ 1000 RX engine which has unfortunately died in a puff of blue smoke .

I believe that the mountings and exhaust manifold etc are all in the same place on the GPZ 1100 and the ZZR 1100. Can anyone tell me if that is correct?

My second question being, if this is correct, where can I get a hold of a ZZR1100 engine and box in Scotland?

Many thanks,

fergus

A Sylva Striker is a BEC (bike engined car), and a very rapid one at that!

Try ANY of the breakers in the back of MCN - any of them will ship an engine to you. Seems a strange choice of engine though!

I'm sure you could make just about any bike engine fit with a bit of engineering. I once put an early ZZR1100 engine into a ZX-10 and it needed new mounting plates. As the ZX-10 came between the RX and the ZZR in the Kwacker evolutionary scale, I'd be very surprised if you were looking at a straight swap, and I know for a fact that the GPZ is totally different to all the above.

Thanks for the replies.

I am going to try and strip the engine today (I think) and find out what went wrong.

I think I may stay with the GPZ 1000 as changing it at this stage could be very expensive as I am not an enigneer and would need to get the work done for me.

Does anyone know (Possibly a stupid question) if the GPZ 1100 is just a bored out GPZ 1000?

It would seem a shame to swap the broken engine with one exactly the same. It may seem less painful to swap the engine due to upgrade!

Simple - take the engine out and stick it on a bike!

That quite depends on which GPz/Z you are talking about. Actually, IIRC the GPZ1000RX used a bored out GPZ900R motor, the ZX10 a new motor and the ZZR11 a heavily revised ZX10 motor. The GPz1100 of similar RX vintage and earlier was air/oil cooled (as denoted by the small z, water-cooled bikes got Z, upper case, see?) and is much larger and heavier.

The more recent GPZ1100 used a modified ZZR11 motor in much the same way as the ZRX does, e.g. retuned to remove the top end, not necessarily to increase bottom and mid range.

I would suspect that the changes necessary to get a more modern motor, such as a ZZR, to fit would not be too difficult to arrange via new mounting plates where necessary, though it is likely that you would need the matching carbs/FI stuff and engine management box.
