I am building a mid engined GT and was contemplating using either the BMWV 10 or the Dodge Viper V10, I am leaning more to the viper as I know it can be pushed to give the 700bhp I am looking for easier than the BMW.
The info I am looking for is this does anyone know who in the UK would be able to do the tuning/modifications.
The second and at this stage more inportant is can anyone provide the vital dimensions of the Viper engine, ie,
1 - Length from front of pulleys to Flywheel
2 - height from base of sump to top of cam covers
3 - Width at widest point (I would assume that to be over the exhaust manifolds unless the heads are wider)
4 - Long shot this rough guide as to where the engine mounting points are located.

Many thanks in advance for any information proffered.

Yeh, I can help you, I have a book with diagrams and all the dimensions you require. the only problem is that the book is at home, then I will have to bring it to work to scan it, then send it onto you, so maybe you'll get it in a couple of days smile

if you go the viper route it will be tough to find an engine in the UK, so youll need to import, then it makes sense to have any mods carried out in the US if you can before its sent over.

getting it to around 700 will be another £5K upwards, either S/C or turbo, or lots of new expensive internals

a few for sale on ebay to give you an idea

many thanks Viper that was what I thought, mind saying that I have seen a few advertised in the UK in fact 2 of them went for an incredible £1,000 last year, unfortunatley as these things happen they came up when the cash was earmarked elsewhere.

As for why not just buy a Viper?
Well nothing intrinsically wronf with the viper as an off the peg car I just like doing the design work and build process as well as having a target weight of 1250kg.

If you still need the dimensions I can measure for you, are you wanting GenII or III dimensions?

As Viper said, best advise would be to get the motor in USA and tuned out there, I can put you in touch with a builder thats just done a GTS-R motor over here and I sold a flywheel to another company (for their engine-dyno) so some here if need be. Myself, Carl and Colin have personally all had motors apart too. 700bhp is very achievable with good heads, cam, stroker motor, probably what you're after if you're wanting to save the weight (of blowers and turbos). Check out Dans site:

What transaxel were you thinking of using? Rated for 700ft lbs, and an adapter plate to bolt up to the Viper block? You might want to try Elite, I've been working with them, they might be able to help if you go the Viper route:

Thanks N GTS
Am going to look at those websites tonight.
Would have thought the 3 generations would be all more or less the same sizes? I know the Gen 3 has 8.3 L but assumed that was just bored out or stroked.
Well the overall size of the biggest would be best seen as I dont know which i wil end uop with.
I know from previous builds that the latest engine is not always the most tunable so will have to see what the experts recomend.
I was looking at the new Xtrac 6 speed transaxle but it seems some few years from production yet.

Cheers, Jeff.

Have you thought about using the later 8.4 litre unit which has variable valve timing and is 600bhp off the shelf, would'nt take much to get that to 700bhp if you run without the cat's.

I was intending to make the cats removable anyway lol. May be worth looking into and would probably be a similar price to a tuned unit.

Yes already have a tentative price and yes it was quite horriffic in excess of £20K so was looking for a used group C gearbox to no avail.
So gearbox is still very much up in the air.

Many thanks for the engine layout diagrams Colin.

Will model it up roughly in 3D and see how it will fit in the chassis as it currently is.
