MOT FAILURE - REAR FOG LAMP
Discussion
hi guys
bad news...viper failed mot...gen1 1993/4
apparently doesnt have a rear fog lamp.
can anyone advise if there is wiring inplace or does it need running in?
there is swith next to front fogs already.
or have i missed something daft ...like a fuse or something.
if i can get it back to garage today or tomorrow they will pass it for me.
if so, wanna try to get to luton lunch , weather permitting.
best regards
bry

It should have had one fitted to make it through the SVA when it was brought into the Uk... There are two options really:
1. Try and get hold of a European rear light cluster, as these have the rear fogs built in. (best option as this can't be seen, and is therefore not an add on)
2. Fit an aftermarket rear fog, not as pretty as will have to be bolted to the underside of the car.
You mention that you have the switch for it... possibly the bulb(s) are out?

On my car which is a US spec Viper, somebody put in a red bulb into the offside rear reversing light and then rewired the right hand switch on the center consol so that this operates as a rear fog switch, the left hand switch turns on the front spots.
This has not caused me a problem at an MOT.

A basic schematic and a fair bit of info is available here... 1992-1996 Mopar Viper Parts Catalogue (PDF)
If you are looking for more detailed info the manual is definitely the way forward... if there is something specific you are looking for I may be able to find it and talk you through it from the manual, or scan and email specific pages for you, (but when it comes to wiring diagrams that may be difficult due to the way the pages are set out).

hi dave
thanks for help
what i really need to know is are there spare wires in wiring loof to boot of car from centre console.
front fogs are connected to a multipin connector under switch , which has spares on the other side of connector.
if these run to boot....job is half done.
similarly....at the rear light connector in boot there are also spares at the connector
if not....where does the wiring loom run from the boot forward.
best regards

In my US spec 93 I added a separate lamp underneath but it looks pretty rubbish.
In my 94 I used one of the right rear brake lights (I think there are three) and blanked off the left hand side one using tape on the bulb connectors. I had to run the cable along the centre console, behind the centre speakers and through a gap behind the passenger side seat into the rear trunk area.

thanks to everyone for help with rear fog.
just got back from re-test......passed no problem.
here is how i did it in the end.
removed hard top roof
bolted a small bracket onto roll bar using one of the unused boltholes on front face.
bolted halfords square rear fog light to bracket.
this positions the rear fog on the off-side of car just below the 1000mm height limit.
a pair of wires can then be easily hidden behind the seat and under the centre console facias to the switch.
i used the 12v live and neutral feed to the front spot lights and linked them to the rear fog light switch. this then ensures that the rear fog turns off when main headlights are turned off.
re-fit hard top roof.
took me about 2 hrs all up with removing centre fascia and switch panel.
doesnt do much for the look of the car, but good enough to get through mot and all the wiring is within the cabin so no need to run wired under car and through boot.
i intend to remove rear fog and use the bits to make a plug-in setup for next mot and for anyone else to use if they need it.
i will lasercut, bend and paint a proper bracket for mounting light assembly.
run wires under seat and tuck them under centre console fascia.
then use the cigar lighted as the feed using a plug and make a little box to replace asstray with fuse and switch inside.
probably only take about 15 minutes to fully install .
shame i missed luton lunch....hopefully catch the next one
thanks again to everyone for all the help, tips and info.
hopefully i can return the favour some day.
