Michigan based coachbuilder looking to nab cut-price Viper brand

Devon GTX could run get Viper underpinningsRumours circulating in the US press are reporting that Chrysler has received an official bid for the company’s Viper brand.

Amongst court documents filed during the Chrysler bankruptcy was an official offer for the sports car manufacturer from a minor Michigan based coachbuilder named Devon Motor Works.

The company has plans to launch its own supercar, and it is widely believed that were the company to secure the ailing Viper business, the new Devon GTX would get the Dodge Viper running gear. The Devon GTX has already been pencilled in for a Nürburgring lap record attempt in July, and the company hope to officially unveil the car at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance event in August, although what underpinnings it will use is not known.

Chrysler had hoped for offers around the $10m mark, but it is thought that the lone Devon offer is just $5.5m. Nevertheless it is reported that Chrysler is considering the offer and the company’s ability to close the deal.

At least it could be staying stateside and not heading off to Fiat...

if its coming down to $5mil then the VCA should buy it.

Personally i think if this goes through then the viper is dead, at least if chrysler don't sell it and even if they shut down production there is still a chance for it to return, but if these guys get the rights to the name then its as good as gone.
