I wouldn,t hold your breath on that one, I can see a BIG price increase on the way. I wouldn,t be surprized if by 2012 Viper road tax is up to £1000. I think its would be wishful thinking to think other wise. "THE worse polluting car on the planet" is on borrowed time. It not something I like to think about ,but sticking heads in the sand isn,t going to make the issues of 8000cc plus engines go away.
In fact I would put money on it that car like ours will be very very expensive to tax in 10 years time in an all out Global Government effort to make anything "Supercar..ish" a thing of the past. Scarey but true and whilst some might think its all a bit OTT you,d have your head in the sand to think otherwise.
On a personal level I feel very much pulled between keeping or selling the Venom, whilst I can cope (just) with the cost of fuel I do feel very uncertain about even the short term future of our cars (Vipers) let alone the long term prospects.I don,t want to be left with a £35k Pink Elephant stuck in the garage.
The global issues IMOP are important but there is a lot of ball st going on with it all and it will be a case of "To play you pay" and if anyone with a 8 ltr Viper thinks there going to be left alone in the corner to play , they are most likely to be in for a nasty shock.I hate all this negative gloom on our future SuperCar fun but if we all take an honest look at thinks going on with the planet and wipe away some of the upbeat cloud9 stuff our days ARE numbered. Only a fool would think otherwise. Its almost a case of who blinks first, once taxes on these cars becomes only for the very rich Supercars and there prices will drop into a bottomless pit as everyone tries to offload them .
My own personal hunch is by 2020 (or in a decade) Vipers and similar cars, will be forced off the roads by any Governent at that time by massive tax penalties........GLOOM.....

On an upbeat note....Get out there and make the most of them as this "Golden Period" in motoring history comes to a close. RIP TO WIND IN THE HAIR AND THE INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE cry

I do agree with you Tom but as always there will be a starting point and no Government would go back beyond say 5 years so pre 2004 Vipers could very well become a premium item. I think yours would be quite safe.

if you could by a new euro spec viper after april 2010 the tax would be £950

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicl...

What changes are being made to vehicle tax from April 2010?
Vehicle tax rates for cars registered on or after 1 March 2001 are split into 13 bands depending on CO2 emissions. The amount you will pay depends on which band your car comes under.

From April 2010 there will be different Vehicle Tax rates for new cars when they are first registered. These are known as ‘first-year rates’. Standard rates of Vehicle Tax will also change in April 2010.
What are the ‘first-year rates’?

From April 2010 anyone buying a new car will pay a different rate of Vehicle Tax for the first tax disc. From the second tax disc onwards they will then pay the standard rate. This will send a stronger signal to the buyer about the environmental implications of their car purchase and will only apply to new cars, not already registered cars.

Band CO2 (g/km) 2010 first-year rate 2010 first-year alternative fuel rate
A Up to 100 £0 £0
B 101 -110 £0 £0
C 111 -120 £0 £0
D 121 -130 £0 £0
E 131 -140 £110.00 £100.00
F 141 -150 £125.00 £115.00
G 151 -165 £155.00 £145.00
H 166 -175 £250.00 £240.00
I 176 - 185 £300.00 £290.00
J 186 - 200 £425.00 £415.00
K 201- 225 £550.00 £540.00
L 226 - 255 £750.00 £740.00
M Over 255 £950.00 £940.00
What about already registered cars?

From April 2010, already registered higher emitting cars will be charged up to £30 more and lower emitting cars will be charged up to £30 less.

I hope your right Tony, but its does play on my mind , you can never be sure of whats going to happen and anything on the DVLA web site can be changed at a Governments whim Neil, nothings set in stone where Tax,s are concerned and I still think its head in the clouds stuff to think were not going to paid to "feel the pain" in a few year time if we don,t bend to the "party" way of thinking. I hope the DVLA pricing figures don,t move to much but with a Save the Planet bandwaggon being a great way to raise tax,s your a braver man than me to be so assured of the future costs, I hope I,m completly wrong and your right! But the CO2 tax rules are still in the early stages IMOP and sooner or later ALL the loop holes maybe closed .

I like the newspaper article. Best sports = Tigra, hmm hardly a sports car.

There are worrying times ahead. It appears to me that manufacturers see this as well. Over the past few years there certainly seams to have been an increase in big powerful cars with big engines particularly from Europe. I wonder if this is one final push on their part before governments legislate them in to line. To me as a petrol head the future looks bleak and all because of 'global warming', sorry 'climate change' - something this world has undergone for millions of years, long before we were around. I really do not buy into this at all. A means of taxation.

Then there is the roads. Poor quality and ever reducing speed limits. Went out on the bike yesterday to find a great part of the A28 is now 99% 40mph, down from NSL. Not many NSL's left now, first they go to 50mph and then 40mph...... Off to France tomorrow though - good roads Did think of going somewhere in the UK but that involves using UK roads and paying UK prices so France it was so up yours Brown you tosser

Of course what that article fails to mention is the fact that most the Vipers/Lambo's etc in this country are amongst the least polluting cars in the country because they spend most the time in the garage

EXACTLY! That's what I find so annoying, yes a Honda Insight might be the greenest car to buy according to the article, but do 10,000 average miles a year in it and it's more polluting than my Viper. This is what they can't seem to get their head around. mad

You would be hard pushed to find a Viper that has produced more CO2 than my daily Mazda. It might only be 2L but has covered 192K miles in less than 5 years. Mind you it is loads more to tax than the Vette...
