Was he booting it? Even an old straight 6 m5 would easily keep up, and a v8 would probably have a 500 in a straight line

The old 3.8 (340bhp) E34 M5's have around 240bhp per tonne so not far off a good 4.0 Chim. The V8 E39 m5's have only 220 per tonne.

I had an encounter with an M5 last summer.

I'm not up on my E numbers? it was one of the new 5 litre V10 500hp jobs with a very naughty exhaust.

All I can say is as it went past I very nearly crapped myself, the sound was demonic and the speed that thing generated was biblical.

I may as well have been in a Fiat Panda, it totally annihilated me.

Those v10 m5s are extremely serious.

Pretty much the fastest cross country car I've ever driven.

No normal RV8 Tiv could hold a candle to one at any stage.

If I had a candle the M5 would have blown it out in a blink of an eye.

I've had various fast things go past me including a Ferrari 458 that I moved over for at 120, he then dropped a cog and let it go.

But surprisingly it was that bonkers M5 that really sticks in my mind, you just don't expect it from a saloon.

And the sound, oh my god the sound eek

An e39 would still be quicker than a 400, even ish to 60 then would clear off. For a heavy car they are very quick. I would also be suprised if the cayman s and z4m would be beaten by a 400 if they were trying. Just going on what my 400 was capable of. I stand to be corrected

You don't say what M5

I came up against an enthusiastic V10 recently and by Christ it was quick

Only car that had every had me dropping gears to properly gap.

I was on my K1200S. Which is far from standard.

I drove one through France for a week. An outstanding car. Utterly forgiving and the performance at any point was superb.

Came home and went to buy one. Drove it on UK roads and it just didn't work. I think the UK roads were just too small for it. You felt you were sitting in something being held back. It needed the open, sweeping roads of the continent to work.

Whereas the Tivs are close to unbeatable for that English experience on English roads.

I'm not saying u didn't mate, but if the drivers of those cars were bouncing them off the limiters they wouldn't have a problem with a standard 400. They may weigh more but they have a lot more power and would all be capable of over 170mph if derestricted.

My Dad's Z4M is a pretty even match for my 500 in the straights, I should imagine it would be leaving a 400 well behind. Definitely loses out in the noise battle though! smile
