In relation to my previous topic "black powder" and in particular to the fact that when I stop at junctions the revs dip and rise, I have checked the car out and found the stepper motor to be slightly loose. I think by trying to follow the manual and "not overtighten" I went to the other extreme and left it to loose. The rev problem has now disapeared (for now at least) does that make sense? Also tightned bolt on air valve ontop of plenum, by half a turn and now no longer get black smoke. I know this is a bodge job, but I don't have time to get my car into TVR until after my holiday. Thanks for all your help guys,

Yours a complete mechanical Numbty burger.

James, at the risk of getting flamed, it's a basic Rover V8 at the end of the day (underneath it all). A chap who works out of his garage has been servicing various cars of mine for over 20 years, he was changing the oil in the Chim for me (not a main dealer requirement methinks!) and couldn't get over how 'simple' everything looked. He actually said carrying out a service on it would be a doddle, but quite rightly pointed out that Tiv's need a full TVRSH for resale, etc.

What I'm saying is take the Tiv on holiday, if the worst happens, then a Rover dealer/indy should be able to get you going again.

Thanks Mate, Iam going to take it on holiday tommorrow, I am now a top package member with the AA, and just to be safe have joined the RAC as well. Iam taking a list of TVR dealers with me along the route and rover dealers, ps is an Indie and Independant?

Does that stepper motor thing sound right? Iam not betting on getting down south and back without incident, Ill let you know if I made it or not.

The first time I took the stepper motor out the washer disintigrated, so I wrapped it's thread with ptf tape thinking that would suffice. The result was the car stalling almost every time I put the clutch in.

What I hadn't factored is that the washer determines the seating of the unit for optimum running. Unwinding it a notch or two sorted it. Since then I've memorised that the *electrical connection sits at 11 o'clock whenever I clean it.

Hope this is of help,
Kenny.

edited to add that *the electric push connector sits arounnd 11 O'clock- but cars may differ.

Yes mate, indy is independent. Don't forget a Land Rover dealer can help too - Disco V8 and all that.

Thanks guys, Just got back from holiday and car performed very well. Still wont start when hot but i can live with that. i will invest in some heat shield for fuel rail etc. Stepper motor does now sit at 11 o'clock!! as oppose to the 4 o'clock it was. The air pipe from the airflow meter to the plenum was also a bit loose. Thanks for all your help I was within 2 hours of selling the car to a dealer for £8000 glad I posted on here first.
