Hi folks,

Just a few pics of my "Work in Progress"! Engine is now fully rebuilt. While it was away, I decided to try and clean up some of the bits n bobs.

Ba bit untidy, after standing with a broken Crankshaft for 6 months!

Using the Overhead Crane at Work!

She's out!! a very scruufy engine bay.

Urrgh!

Very handy having a shot blasting machine at Work!

Manifolds ready, not sure if I should paint them with VHT Paint? or Exhaust wrap? or just leave them!

Finished!

Plenum was blasted, then finished in a Clear Coat called "Top Hat" It's used for Valves offshore in the North sea. Very hard and durable finish!

I used a Aluminium tape (Again an offshore product) for the heatshield on the smooth bore ducting & Bosch AFM

Finished Coil & Amp, refurbed plug extenders.

ACT Trumpets & matched ports etc.

Just the Fuel rail to re-furb, then I'm done!

So, the fuel rail to do, re-fit Plenum & that's about it!

The engine bay is nearly ready, will post pics when complete.
Probably try and get her fitted next month!

Gotta take the GF on Holiday first though!

Cheers!
Ian

Looking great! thumbup

I'd have the exhaust manifolds ceramic coated at Zircotec - not a fan of exhaust wrap, tends to lead to premature manifold replacement due to it being a great moisture retainer...

I have heard the same about the Wrap, holding moisture, is it that bad though?

anyone know the costs of having said manifolds Ceramic coated?

Thanks!

Last time I enquired it was about £25-40 per ft depending on what finish you want. Guesstimate for a pair of TVR exhaust manifolds - 6 ft?

Well, today the Engine finally(!) will be fitted!

So, fingers crossed it will all go well.

going to be a nervous moment when I get to turn the key!!

Below is the starting procedure given to me by my engine builder. Going to follow this to the letter.

Hope to be posting later with good news.

Ian.

Heard this stuff tends to chip/wear badly after time....is it really worth it and what are the benefits please as mine going in for some engine work soon???

Looking really good but I gotta say the before was is a , how can I put this, a really sorry state paperbag.

More importantly, how did the crank snap, what was the cause?

Well we are nearly finished!

Just got fluids & exhaust to fit today, and then fire her up!

The "before" pics are looking a bit sorry yes! Thats because after she sat outside for a few months after the crank snapped. And I live in Aberdeen, so it was over a nasty winter!

The engine was removed, and after some research I took it to B.H Engineering in Kinloss Morayshire.
bhengineering.co.uk

Brian is very knowledgeable and has built many RV8's.

Brian found that the crank had snapped over No.8 Journal, this was due to "hydraulic lock".
It happened as I strated the engine on a cold November morning, Brian thinks that water had seeped past the gasket into No.8 cylinder, and when I turned it over "Crack!" I could hear a god awfull noise.

So, Brian did a full rebuild, new crank, TVR Power Cam, followers, timing chain etc etc.
It turns out that the engine is a 5.2L unit that according to the engine No.s was from a "Morgan V8."

I will post some pics later, so wish me luck!

Ian.

Very interesting that it is a 5.2!

Yes, good luck with the final bits and pieces, that will be a great looking car at the finish.

Mainly lower underbonnet temps, which on our cars is desirable in many ways.

I'd have thought the Zircotec would be OK for wear, seeing as it's widely used in classic car restos as well as motorsport applications?

It's in!

But there's a problem!

Started up OK, and with an adjustment to the timimg got her running 90%. Followed the running in procedure for the Cam, checked for leaks, etc and no problems there.

But it looks like we have a misfire, or as if it's only firing on 7 of the 8. We started to lift the leads off the plugs as she's running to trace the one that appeared to not be firing. As we were doing this the engine stopped, she started after a couple of spins, ran again for 30 seconds then stopped again. After which we could not start her. We checked for a spark from the coil and low and behold there's not one. Looks like the coil & or the Amp unit has failed. Now I'm hoping that this was the cause of the rough running?? Now need to order new ones & fingers crossed that will cure it!

Best place for a Bosch (I think?) coil and Amp unit??

Cheers,

You take parts that are working perfectly off the car, carefully store them and refit them later to find they fail.
I think some of these fragile lucas parts dont like to be disturbed.
I had the same problem with mine but was fortunate to have new spares ready.

All these parts will be in a cardboard box again very soon or maybe on ebay.

Just done some searching on the PH forums and Landy ones.

Looks like the ignition amplifier is the suspect, there are a few threads that show symptoms of misfiring, and also lots of complete failures. So, rather than change both, I will change the amp and take it from there.

Not that it is the problem but you need to put the belt on the right way!
