If I buy an engine from a breaker or private seller to re build and put in my car , do I need the V5 , or will I just inform the DVLA of the new engine number and capacity when I have my current V5 amended.

Thanks

Ant.

In theory you just tell the dvla of the changes.
But they may ask for a garage report telling of the engine swap.

You don't need the V5, but you will need to get written proof from a garage that the engine in question is actually in your car confused

nope, you just need the receipt for the engine(see below, taken from DVLA website):

Change to engine and cylinder capacity (engine size)

DVLA will need written evidence of any changes to engine number and cylinder capacity (cc). Written evidence can be:

-a receipt for the replacement engine
-written evidence from the manufacturer
-an inspection report provided for insurance purposes
-written confirmation on headed paper from a garage if the change in engine size took place before you bought the vehicle

When I swapped my motor, I just filled in the new number on the reg doc and sent it off

It came back with the new number...... No proof no other docs required
I tried that with my Wedge, but they sent it back and told me get proof.

I must have dishonest hand writing confused
