Having spotted a slight oil leak, I initially thought it was the sump gasket. The bible says that there are 2 types, 17 bolts on serp engine, and 16 on pre-serp. Mine's a serp., so whilst cleaning it up in an effort to identify the source, I counted but could only see 16 bolts on mine.

I see in an earlier thread that it was mentioned (Spend, I think) that there was only 1 type of sump fitted to the TVR RV8, so, are they all 16 bolt or do I need to get under again and learn to count properly?

I'm not convinced it is the sump gasket now, in any event, but would be interested to know others' views. Also, if it is the sump gasket, is there a rubber gasket available, and if so, anybody got a part no.??
Thanks in advance

Essentially correct, sounds like you are being confused by looking at p38 LR 4.0/4.6's which have completely different front (aka oil, aka timing) covers which change the front of the sump pattern.

All ours have the same old historic pattern from day 0, only change that they latterly used sealant instead of a cork gasket as standard.

Thankee kindly!! - it does look as if mine has been done with sealant and not a cork gasket.

No Problem, check the rocker covers & valley gasket area ~ PITA cleaning up & tracing where oil comes from (it seems to creep everywhere) but even worse 'fixing' to find problem is yet somewhere else hehe

Hmmm... so by switching to a P38 front cover, the less deformable cast sump can be used? If so, any idea whether the 'depth' is sufficient to allow for the longer throw cranks we use from time to time? Expect you're about to tell me stuff like the water pump and front seal etc is different... nerd

Has anyone fitted a silicone sump gasket? there's a company selling them on eBay , I've got a few oil drips from my sump and was wondering if the silicon option is worth the xtra dosg?

Yes, or as already mentioned just use sealant.

I definitely won't be 'fixing' it until I'm sure of the source - as you say, just bit of a pain identifying where it's coming from - such are the joys. It's times like this when I wish I'd bought one of those garage type lifts/ramps smile

Assuming you're competent take a file to the sump. I dressed mine and the high spots where the holes are pressed were very pronounced yes

Oh, and have a look inside the pickup for any old gasket...
