ignition lead recomendations?
Discussion
Hey guys, whilst checking over my car today I have found that my coil to dizzy lead has a very blue and corroded end that joins onto the dizzy. now I believe these are actually fairly new and have land rover stamped on them so I wouldn't have thought they are over cheap crap.
I did do a Google and obviously magnecor are right up there but quite expensive and I had seen Castle race engines mentioned a few times but the website doesn't seem to work and number I found is no longer in use, any ideas or any other recommendations?

I recenttly had Magnacor's fitted together with new plug shrouds and a new coil, rotor (original Lucas) and dizzy cap.
Made an amazing difference - now runs smoothly from just over tickover to the red line whereas before has a stutter between 2,200 and 2,500 rpm.
Expensive but did the job

I fitted a Magnecor lead set about two years ago and they have been spot on, I went for the red KV85 ones.
No jumping rev counter, no connection issues & very resistant to heat, they are a quality product in my opinion.
The only down side is they are ridiculously expensive!!!!!!!!!!!

I also fitted woven fibreglass shrouds that cover the vulnerable end part of the lead from exhaust heat.
These shrouds are also ridiculously expensive in the UK, but I bought mine online from the US, I think I paid £40 for a set of 8 including postage to the UK.

I cant help thinking I could have purchased a quality Chevy/Ford V8 lead set from the US too and saved myself a small fortune.

The US market for this type of stuff is huge, the quality is often excellent & you normally pay at least half the rip off UK (treasure Island) prices.

Alex,
Even with the duty, VAT and freight it still works out less expensive in most cases.
On anything heavy just shop around the freight forwarders for a quote.
I'm about to order a 'built' (500lb/ft) T5 gearbox.
Cost under £1K GBP plus circa $400 USD freight including a bunch of clutch parts.

Dont forget to add 20% vat and 5% import duty and delivery
I think its a bit of "pot luck" whether you get caught for duty/vat?I've bought heat shrouds and a few other small low value items from the States and only been stung for tax once, usually just the Ebay price (at Paypal exchange rate) and postage.

Interested in the bit about 'no jumping rev counter'. I have magnecors and no probs', however as of recently I do now have a jumping rev counter up to about 3k revs No jumping rev counter, no connection issues & very resistant to heat, they are a quality product in my opinion.
could this be a cause?macdeb said:

Yes,but try to borrow a known good set of HT leads before you point the finger at the Magnecors as it could also be a duff coil, lead extender/s or a low tension wiring fault etc
could this be a cause?
JonyTVR standard leads work perfectly well on these cars i.e Lucas plenty on here use them
although the yankie one's look nicer

The jumping issue is caused by the HT leads being to low a resistance. The Magnecors come in various types, and its not worth using the Race type leads on an RV8 engine at 50-60 BHP per litre, as you dont have a highly tuned engine that is likely to extinguish the spark, and it can put high voltage spikes on the ignition primary. A standard set of decent HT leads (like Bosch) will give you exactly the same performance without breaking the bank. Unfortunately there is NO BHP gain to be had with fancy leads, although if you original set is knackered and leaking voltage you may well see an improvement.

(I have the magnecor 10.5mm racing leads that get slated on here and they work just lovely

Maybe no advantage in electrical performance, but the reason I junked my Magnecore leads was that they seem to be very prone to breaking at the 90 deg. bend inside the dizzy end cap - happened twice to me, and each time I was refused a replacement unde the so-called lifetime guarantee. So I slung the lot before yet another broke, and bought some better quality Moroso leads, which have not broken. To be clear, I bought these direct from the manufacturer in the UK.
Ah, perhaps I should've mentioned I have megasquirt 2 installed controlling both fuel and spark. I went for it as when using N2O it has a switchable ignition map that is retarded and went for magnecors hoping for reliabilty with the spark. The jumping rev counter issue has only recently started to happen, however I have another odd problem that has been ongoing now since install and that is an intermittant misfire [like a reset but doesn't record as one] sometimes it doesn't happen at all and then sometimes all the time. Tried all the recommended stuff but can't solve problem and wondered if possible it may be the leads all along and now getting worse causing something else.
Clutching at straws now.
PS; sorry for sort of hi-jack but still lead related maybe.
