here we go - hot start AND dodgy alternator
Discussion
Chaps,
2 weeks into ownership and after a run home in traffic yesterday watching the temp gauge go up and the oil pressure go down arrived home, turned off engine opened garage door went to restart - nothing.
left it half an hour and it started with sluggish motor - sound familiar?
Then I put a meter on the "new" alternator fitted by previous owner and its putting out 7 volts ?
I noticed that the red ignition warning light seems to glow dimmly and come on bright if brakes are applied or the fans kick in.
So 2 issues maybe - what is the hot start mod that is mentioned often - or is it a new starter - same old question I guess.
being a pre-serp motor should it be a 100amp alternator or 70/80 amp?
cheers
Steve

I fitted the Modwise hot start kit to mine last year after a couple of non-starts. The mod has done a good job up until a couple of weeks back when the 20 amp fuse in the mod blew when trying to start.
I am thinking that the mod actually disguises an underlying problem which is still present and growing bigger up untli the point that even the mod can't cope. In my case a new starter motor cured the issue and spins the engine over impressively fast hot or cold.
After all, when these cars were new they can't have had the problem otherwise all the proud owners would have taken them back to be fixed. So as many threads on here describe you get wear, tear, stickiness and sluggishness building up over the years until you reach the point that you have to overhaul or replace the starter. I replaced mine, I thought that after 11 years service in that hot enviroment it deserved to be retired!

Have you checked the 100 amp fuse as this can cause a whole host of problems?
Sometimes it doesnt completely blow, just gets corroded and causing bad connection which can cause problems with charging etc. Had simlar issues with mine when I first bought mine and now get it changed at each service. Cheap peace of mind. Hopefully yours is as simple as that. Re the hot start mod, again worth every penny in my humble opinion.
Good luck!
