Does anyone else have a problem putting petrol in a Chimaera(apart from paying for it). It takes me ages to fill up as the pumps keep cutting off. I've tried holding the nozzle in different positions (!!!) and every garage in the area that sells super UL. Any ideas?

Try filling it from the wrong side, the nozzle will be at a better angle. I had this problem with my 4l Chim, but have never noticed it with my 5l for some reason.

I had something of this sort to start with on my '97 500. Symptoms included the pump cutting out, as well as the fuel sloshing down the back of the car. Which is alarming. Especially with hot exhausts. That was until I found out that the nozzle would go in another three or so inches if I faffed with it enough. The narrow part of an unleaded pump nozzle has a corresponding narrow slot deep inside the filler neck.

I have found that filling up my 500 varies from pump to pump, but the best option is to ensure the nozzle is fully home and then angle it away from you elevating towards the back. It is very uncomfortable on the wrist but it prevents the constant cutting out. I have found it quite quick to fill like this because the auto-cutout on the pump doesn't keep clicking in. Pump nozzle should be aligned at around 11 oclock - this seems to be the optimum position for uninterrupted filling! Hope it works!

How many times have I been standing at the pumps, wiggling it around in the hole, with fluid squirting everywhere except where I want it to go! And filling the car's petrol tank's not easy either!! I find holding the nozzle in the 6 o'clock position, leaning it lightly against the boot strut, works most of the time. How does the pump cut-out work, anyone?

Is this a test? I would guess, and I stress guess, that petrol flowing into air has less resistence than petrol flowing into petrol, therefore when the nozzle is immersed in petrol (i.e. the tank must be full) the pump senses the change in resistence and cuts out. How's that, marks out of 10? PS. Hi nubbin, i'll be in touch soon

What a sad thread. & now here's how to do it Hold the filler thing at 3-oclock ( hand grip in the boot ). The nozzle has to follow the petrol tank pipe. At 3-oclock they're at the same angle you see. I learned this after some guy tapped me on the shoulder & said 'your flooding the forcourt mate' 82p a litre too Anyone manage to get more than £43.23 in their chim ?? A sad thread, and how sad is posting to it at 1:45 am?? I think the consensus is to get the pump nozzle at the same angle as the tank filler neck. I maintain that this is easiest when you fill from the opposite side, no double jointed wrists required. Exception of course is City owners with PAS, who will have the required flexibility of wrist to achieve correct insertion from any angle.

Hiya, Macca!! I managed to get about £70 into my tank, but that's 'cos it had a hole at the bottom (3weeks after I bought it new!) and I filled the boot with petrol, too! Peeled all the carpets off, ruined all the bits I had in the boot, and was dripping out onto the hot exhaust. TVR were only too happy to re-imburse me for the replacement goods.

Talk of petrol pumps has never had that effect on me.
