Well before I went away there was a fully sound from under the bonnet, first thought it was the alternator and basically ignored it since I was going on holiday, head in the sand, sort it on my return.

Well had a proper look t it today....arrrrrrrrrr........the problem appears to be no fluid in the power steering system, the black reservoir is completely empty..........will be buying some on line tonight me thinks. A quick question though, is there anything I should check, besides where the leak is? Any possible perm damage else where?

I has similar experience, topped the reservoir back up, checked, found and repaired the link ( loose jubilee clip ) and fortunately that was the job done. All OK since.

This does not answer your question but before you go stripping things out you may find you have a similar "easy fix" experience.

I was checking out new power steering because it was screaming so loud, but got away with a top up and a new jubilee clip.

Cheers for that, yes will try a top up when the new liquid arrives and see if I can identify the loose clip/leak, in the mean time I will tighten up the ones I can see ;-)

Obviously need to find where the leak is, must be fairly serious to loose all that fluid! are there no drips anywhere giving you clues?

Check the rubber boots at the ends of the rack. If the rack is leaking it is common for the seals at the end of the rack to fail and the rubber boot on the end of the rack can fill up with fluid so much it is bulging!

On mine this happened on the passenger side. You will be able to easily see this if you have a look. Give the rubber boot a light squeeze if nothing obvious in case it has leaked out already.
