Hi all,
Was loving it out in the sun today until was trying to exit from a steep hill, stalled, then handbrake wouldn't secure on high enough. Car started rolling back; luckily I was able to control it on the brake, and then restart, but if there had been anything behind me I would have been in all sorts.
Has anyone else had this trouble -securing the car on steep hills?
Is my hand brake screwed?
Grrr. it's going to be a pricey summer..

doesn't need a steep hill to do that !

Parked mine on the h/brake in front of our house, less than 10 metres of gentle slope to the junction into the high street on a busy saturday morning. Shut the door and off she rolled....

Very lucky to catch it. A real cold sweat moment. The blushing was the least of my worries at that point.

The handbrakes are notoriously rubbish on these cars Dave, so don't panic.

By the sound of it you ran out of clicks when lifting the handbrake - is this right?
If so, if you remove the drivers side rear wheel you should be able to follow the handbrake cable until you come to a big (3") knurled knob which allows you to tighten or loosen the handbrake.
Its white unless its been coated in waxoyl, so with a torch you might actually be able to see it.

Give it a few turns and see how you get on.

You can get to the adjuster if you lay right next to the car and reach up, no need for any tools or jacking biggrin

I dont know how you guys get to it on the ground, I thought it was a pig to get to and that was when on a ramp! I also had trouble moving the locknut it backed off then wouldn't wind down the cable eventually got it sorted and using the press the brake technique first its not to bad now but just pulling it on, on its own it can still role pretty much everytime!

Cheers guys. Will get my local mechanic to take a look and tighten -sounds like a tricky thing to get to!
At least I know it's not just me then, and will have to be extremely careful where I park it (or stall!) in future! Bit unnerving though..

Assuming you know where it is without looking...

Pop her in gear, get the top of your shoulder pressing against the rear of the offside rear wheel and reach up into the depths while laying flat. It just comes naturally to hand.

Ummm most of them need slackening, not tightening.. They have just defeated the pad wear adjuster in the caliper (for years and it may be completely seized up by now.....).

I recently changed my discs and pads and the improved contact made the handbrake better. Also the old trick of pressing the foot brake down whilst applying/releasing the handbrake does usually allow you to get it on to the next notch.

After the money spent on my car bankrupted me, any doorway I can lay a piece of cardboard does fine...

Last week got car out of garage, parked on drive with handbrake, went to shut garage door and then felt a little nudge on back of legs. Car had rolled back toward garage behind me. So there I was trapped between locked garage door and car with engine running and no one in sight for help. yikes Daren't take a hand off car to reach for phone so a great effort [feat of strength hehe yeh right] managed to push car out far enough up slight incline and when at full stretch, let go ran round to door, opened it, got in put put brakes on with only a couple of inches to spare before it hit garage. Yes, The handbrakes are st.
