Precautions when welding the exhaust

It looks (and sounds) like there is a pin hole in the front near side exhaust manifold next to the weld on the mating flange. At first I thought it was a leaking gasket but no longer think so. As I can just about get a small stainless steel MMA welding rod in there,I was going to give it a quick blast in an attempt to seal it. However, if I can get the top bolt out I'll TIG weld it. Should I disconnect the battery and the ECU to avoid any damage? Are there any other precautions I should be taking?

If I use the MMA process I will use a -tive earth. If I TIG weld it I will use +tive earth.

Got the top bolt out, cleaned it up and found a 1" long crack around the flange weld. The metal must be realy thin so I will TIG weld it (no sparks, more control etc). Any ideas on disconnecting electric etc?

OK, job done. 10 minutes including removing the airflow meter to make more room. Its as good as new! Well chuffed

I hope you did disconnect the battery and/or ECU. Or at least that you got away with it if not!
