Fuel gauge live?

Why not check any red wire to see if it's ignition fed?

The one to the radio is another option.

Ammeters normally require big st off wires, not to be found in the dash?

Normal dash switched +12v for instruments etc is the green wire that daisy chains to nearly all the dials, LED's etc behind the dash. That is certainly what you would connect a voltmeter to.

I was under the impression this live was for back-lighting or something. Nothing under the dash will be suitable for measuring the battery amperage! yikes

Direct wiring across the battery for that, surely?

Dash switched live (green) also goes to the light switches (2nd pole of the side light switch then onto the headlight switch... so you can have sides on without ign, but heads only when ign & sides are on ~ similar logic with later rotary controls I believe). Unless you are confusing the dash feed with the dash light feed (Red/White wire from the hidden knee switch)?

Will need to be in series to work.

Yes,as above, you'd need to be in series with either the battery pos or neg wire, which means you would indeed need big wires!

Would you not just monitor battery voltage normally?

That would have spectacular results if tried with an ammeter biglaugh

There is a green live wire that loops 3 dials the clock wire is different so after ignition on was getting correct ampage with those 3 wires but the question I ask is will it interfere with say the wire I join into eg the fuel gauge? Or will it be ok? The dash lights are not suitable for this but for the lighting of the ampere dial I will join into another lighting circuit

I shouldn't call it an ammeter it's the extra clock in the griff dash the battery voltage indicator

Hi Ian

...nice to see that you are still doing stuff to your chimaera, hope you sorted the oil pressure reading problem, take it easy budwavey

Indeed, perhaps I meant voltmeter, which is nothing to do with this thread, as you were! smile

In fairness to you, the OP finally concedes it's a volt meter.

See my answer above....

I have done it (with a voltmeter in the dash) , I have rewired the dash myself, and I have drawings to refresh my memory. Unlike many I am not just speculating, in which case I would have put 'think' / thought'... such is my interpretation & use of grammar wink
