The good news and the bad news.
Discussion
Well, I have had more then my share of fiddling under the bonnet this year, (and it's only half way through)!
The good news.
Stripped the top end down over Christmas and fitted nice V8D stage 1V heads, trumpets , ported manifold etc.
Bad news.
Car seemed a bit tappety after a couple of T/D's so decided the cam was on it's way out having done about 30+ T/D's and 27K approx road mileage.
Good and bad news.
Cam and followers were fine but timing chain was well goosed.
Replaced the lot and used the same new Typhoon cam.
Bad news.
Still tappety and got worse over the next few weeks.
Had a friend, a skilled mechanic, have a good listen and we decided it was a small end on the way out, especially after a hard life in the last few years.
Worse news.
Spent today stripping the whole lot down, (decision made after many a refreshment late last night!).
Internals all look in excellent condition!
Unmarked big ends,
No wear in the small ends,
Pistons sound,
Rocker shafts with no play.
WHAT'S MAKING THE NOISE!
The good news is that the Rover engine can take a dam good spanking and still cut it in the wear and tear department.
The bad news is that I have an engine with 8 substantial holes where the pistons were
.
Sodding off now to an all in charity do and I ain't driving back!

Did you change the sprockets as well as the cam chain?
Back now.Yes, the original I changed for a Duplex, (thanks Alex) and yes there was evidence of the odd slight blow on a gasket.
The thing is, I had a blown gasket before and it was different. I did a check of these by the trusted hose in the ear and the stethascope method to no avail.
I will renew the pistons, rings and mains shells as a matter of course.
Will order up parts on Monday.

You say you settled on a small end diagnosis, how did you decide that? Did the noise go away with a plug cap off?
My immediate thought was 'liner' too
At a slow idle all seemed fine.My immediate thought was 'liner' too
If you raised the rpm to say, about 1500 and held it at the spot where the tapping started, you could hold it there and it was very pronounced.
At a constant 30-40 mph with the roof off, you could here it ticking away quite audibly.
It definitely sounds like one tap at one rpm iyswim.
I have never seen a slipped liner but I guess it is obvious and my liners are all flush with the top of the block.
We checked the manifolds and there are no splits although I will have the faces tidied up for reassembly.
There is slight evidence of gas leak at the exhaust gasket but just a bit of dark staining.
I had a gasket go last year where a small section of the gasket dissapeared and the noise was something else!
When assembled last, the preloads where set at the lower end of the setting range, about 30 thou iirc.
I really am struggling.
I drove Alex's car after and his engine is quieter, mine has always seemed a bit tappety, even before this latest occurance, (with new cam and followers)?

I wouldn't bother with rings unless you can hone first, unless really desperate - you will lose power.
Spend, are you advising using the same rings?Fit new pistons and reuse rings?
Or just refit the existing pistons and rings.
We did a compression test a couple of weeks ago and the readings were all in the region of 200.

If it were me and ive seen your bore and rings, id refit as there's still good honing marks on your bores and as you said your compression was 210 average so you know the rings are goodFit new pistons and reuse rings?

Edit- apart from that slight scoring on one

What do you recommend?
New pistons needs new rings needs light hone.... based on you saying you were having new pistons. What do you recommend?
but I'm the one who spouts BS so Alex will tell you (who had to ask about external differences in inlet manifolds but now seems to be an expert on the internals of the water galleries
tosser!)You can use what you like, how you like... Honing is quite a detailed subject in itself with many varying opinions... I know where I get blocks honed & really wouldn't want to go to the trouble of risking anywhere else, and I'd rather not get into any do this do that confrontations..
I'd guess you can easily get over 10% difference in power between similar engines where attention to detail is applied in this area, so a case of making a choice about what you really want? I was under the impression that you really wanted to maximise what you had, so attention to detail would be paramount.
