i have a 93 4.3 Chimaera that has been laid up for a few years. i decided drag it out of the garage and start creating a joblist of the work that is required to make it road worthy again.

The first issue i have appears to be a stalled fuel pump (not priming at key on). i have hotwired the fuel pump by connecting a battery directly to the pump (via a fuse) and there is a slight clunk from the pump and not the usual whirr.

Has anyone had a similar issue? i am thinking that maybe it is possible that some debris is lodged in the pump after the layup or is it more likely that the pump is kaput?

if i need a new unit can anyone reccomend a supplier?

Many thanks,

Syrup

I had the same thing shortly after purchasing my Chim' (It had been laid up too)
Changed the pump and away she went.
The pump is a Bosch part, so any motor factor should be able to supply it
(Got mine from Central Auto Supplies)
While you're at it change the fuel filter. And if you can, flush the
petrol tank; mine was full of crud!

Hi Syrup,

I had the same issue as you after several years with the car laid up. Originally went to Racing Green for the pump as they were a little cheaper, but after a month of failing to get the pump to me I cancelled the order and went to Racetech Direct who sent me the pump within the week.

The pump itself is reasonably easy to fit yourself, but it's worth getting a new fuel filter at the same time.

Petrol goes off and turns into a jelly like substance. If its been sat for a few years the pump is probably clogged with it. Not sure if you can clean it out, probably worth just replacing. While its out you can also flush the tank and put new fuel in. Probably find you need to replace the filter too.

Reverse the pump connections for a moment, so it spins backwards. It may be enough to get it working if it is dirt.

Thank you for the rapid responses!.

Will certainly have a look to see if it is gummed up and if it can be cleaned out before purchasing a new part. Have read that a smack with a hammer may also help but will leave this as a last resort. Will
get it on the bench and take it from there.

John (JR6YAM) do you happen to have the part number and price for the pump you sourced from CAS?

Cheers,

Gav

Hi Gav

I'm afraid I don't have the part number handy, probably best to
take it off the old unit.
I think CAS billed me about 90 quid (Was 2 years ago tho')

I have the part number somewhere - will take a look.

The Bosch pumps were used on lots of cars including Astras, Cavaliers, etc.

Hello again,

blitz racing, I tried reversing the pump when I hotwired it but still no response, just the same dull clunk.

Will try to blow the pump through with an airline when i can get it on the bench. maybe this will clear the blockage if there is one.

johnny b. if you do have the part number that would be great.

Cheers,

Gav
