hi,i have an intermittent starting problem which i think may be down to the ignition switch because if i play about with the key and hold it in on position the car eventually starts.i have a new switch, but i cant get at the old one to remove it.has anyone done this, what is the procedure?

The electrical part of the switch is held to the lock barrel by two grub screws. You will see the lugs on the new switch where the screws engage. One is easy to get to the other is at the back of the barrel and cannot be accessed without removing the lock from the column.
When I changed my switch I loosened the easy to get to screw and there was enough play to flex the switch out of its holding lugs and get the new one in.
I found it was easier to do with the lock barrel removed as it gets the operating shaft out of the way.

Hope this helps

Before you condemn the ignition switch, make sure you test it with a meter.

Takes 5 minutes to confirm if the switch is the problem.

I had similar issues to you and went straight to the switch, a quick test eliminated it as the cause.

If you turn the key and every so often you get nothing (not even a click from the starter solenoid) & your switch checks out fine.

Then you may well have the very common immobiliser fault like me and may others.

Seems like a rash of this at the moment.

Perhaps the Meta immobilisers are all reaching the end of their working lives this summer.

Ideally Carl Baker is the man to sort it properly.

I assume you found out how to remove the lock barrel.

If it's just the immobiliser talk to Carl. You do not have to go and see him. I removed my immobiliser and sent it to him with a drawing of the connections as he requested. He sent me back a replacement immobiliser and two new reset keys within a week. A very quick turnaround I thought.

I had bypassed the immobiliser for the week that it was away so I could still use the car.
