As some of you may know (thanks to the Plumber) I run a Mark Adams best guess Tornado chip.

A while ago I asked if anyone had tried accessing the pre-cat map by adding a green tune resistor.

Some of you hinted (in theory) that switching to a 470 Ohms ECU (green) tune resistor could release a few extra MGP at motorway speeds.

This weekend I went to the very wet but very boozy BBWF beer, so I figured the 170 mile round trip was the perfect opportunity to test the theory.

Before I set out in went the green tune resistor and I turned the key, well it seemed to start OK, & ran OK if a little rough at first.

I took a chance and set off on my trip to see what magic the pre-cat map would deliver.

THE RESULTS ARE AS FOLLOWS;

1) Idle, hunts and stalls a lot (nasty)

2) Rev limit, back to Range Rover standards, never hit a rev limiter on my Chim before but the 470 Ohms ECU tune resistor gives you one (rubbish)

3) Economy, noticeably worse than my standard lambda controlled set up (rolleyes)

So in summary, for me the whole pre-cat map thing is a complete waste of time.

TBH the results were no surprise at all, however the resistor is so cheap & easy to fit I figured it was worth it just for the fun of the experiment.

I will be putting the white tune resistor straight back in before I use the car next weekend, and that's the way it will stay.

Anyone want a green tune resistor wink

Dave.

Odd mine revved to 6700 rpm on a dyno

Using the same set up

I don't doubt it Alex but not on mine mate, did a little noise test at the BBWF and it was bouncing off the limiter very early doors.

The facts are the green tune resistor didn't work for me at all, but I can't comment on how it might pan out for others.

What MA puts on the pre-cat side of the map is a mystery to all but one man, perhaps I got a Range Rover map & you got something better?

Perhaps I got some silicone on it tongue out

I freely admit my test wasn't exactly scientific, just a driving & economy appraisal really.

For a more conclusive assessment of the pre-cat map I would need to put the car on the rollers, but why would I waste my time & money doing that when it's clearly a white elephant on my car (well a green one actually).

Spoke to MA the other week and it went something like this:

"Hi Mark, good to finally catch up with you, did you get my emails?"

"Possibly, apologies I have had some family issues but I am back to the business now"

"Glad to hear it, would you like to map my car?"

I wont bore you with the rest but somehow we never did set a date???????

Mark finished the conversation by saying:

"I will get back to you in the next few days, if you don't hear from me do feel free to chase me up"
(already that made me suspicious)

I waited a week and did exactly as he said, that was three weeks ago and still no response.

What a way to run a business, honestly if he doesn't need the work & my money, no problem.

Just tell me.

If he needs to book two cars in to make the day worthwhile to him, again, no problem.

Just tell me.

If he simply doesn't want my business, no problem.

Just tell me.

Can you see a theme developing here?

I am a patient man, but I also work hard for my money, a session with Mark is not exactly a cheap experience.

So I don't expect to have to beg him as well hand over a wad of my hard earned.

A totally stupid situation if you ask me, I have been completely put off the whole idea and am now looking at the other options we all know about.

Nice bloke to talk to though, I genuinely wish him all the best, & I would be more than happy to tell him that to his face.

If I could only get to meet him rolleyes

Thats why i gave up in the end..I would of been happy with the CUX if it were tuned right but the best guess map was crap or it could of been a problem with my engine..he was in Dubai on and off for months. Why not go for the Megasquirt plug and play to start with fuel only ...anyone with a rolling road and decent knowledge could tune it or do it your self ..

These are not normal cars mate ,that why i have a TVR ..most people would not consider a TVR..Im getting there in the end!other than that by now i would of sent 5000 emails and begging letters to re map my engine.Once you know how to map with Megasquirt its a doddle and keeps you away from the telly..laugh

But it's still a basic crappy rover v8

An old typewriter could manage a rover v8

No idea, got to go to court to see what's what, but can't drive until then, it's making work abit difficult at the moment

Good luck with it, I'm sure there must be a simple explanation.

Cant see why they wouldn't just tell you though.

If you are going to court it's your right to be represented.

If you are represented your brief would need to build a defense, so he/she would need details.

Surely it's your right to know why they revoked your license before the big day in court?

Right?

Was it anything to do with coke & wes by any chance?

I’m really surprised the non cat map did not work. I’ve been running the MA Tornado chip (as for a mildly tuned 3.9) in both cat mode for the last few years and then this year non cat mode, and its far better in non cat mode. The fuelling stops bouncing around and is rock steady at lambda one most of the time, (no trace of shunting) but it both richens and leans off as needed when the engine requirements change. Idle is absolutely perfect, far better than the cat set up that’s always slightly rough. The one big thing is to get the CO trim on the side of the AFM spot on as it will control the mixture up to around 2500 rpm (yes- including light cruising) so if its wrong both your MPG and idle will suffer. Mines set at 1.8 volts, which is a fraction rich on the Lambda gauge, not that you would notice otherwise. Also there is no rev limiter on either map (Well I have a programmable soft rev limiter as an extra at 6200 rpm,) I’ve never hit the Lucas one! Ive not done an MPG check, its of little odds the car is running so nicely.

One point of note generally, I know in the past that an odd rich spot is seen around 2100 - 2500 rpm, and origionally I thought this a mapping issue. I now believe its air turbulance around the hot wire sensor in the AFM if you dont have the wire mesh fitted. My air intake is not the same as the TVR however ,as I have a K&N straight onto the AFM, so I dont have the smoothing effect of the long pipe from the air filter, but its just a thought.

I complained about paperwork for a motoring offence not being delivered or sent with recorded delivery and as a motorist, it appears you are guilty until proven innocent. The people that do this to us use proof of postage, not delivery to start their timing. If you dont respond to what is sent-out, as the registered keeper of the vehicle, you are liable within a time period.

The final 7 day warning for court appearance was still sent in normal post and unmarked envelope. It arrive at the weekend, so I picked the post up by chance. It looked almost identical to a variety of direct mail that goes straight to bin on a regular basis.

We check more thoroughly now, but it does all seem a bit wrong to me.

After a decent run on the non cat map, I now have a much better idea of how it works in cruise mode. It holds the AF ratio near lambda 1 up to around 2800 rpm, and only leans off above this point, so with my gearing you wont see this until 75-80 mph and a light throttle. You simply wont see this around town at all. Having now run in this mode for some miles on the motorway I was hoping to see the mid 20's mpg, but it only returned 22mpg, which is virtually the same as the catalyst map, albeit a lot nicer to drive. I really dont know how people get the high 20's mpg as I was not thrashing the car at all, and the fueling appears to be as good as you can get it. It may simply boil down to poor ignition timing control under light throttle, something the stock RV8 set up is pretty bad at.

I'd rather bet on the national lottery than what Mark put in the alternate maps of one chip... [confused]

.. and I am proud to say I have never bought a lottery ticket, or even been tempted... a horses nose just makes so much more sense mathematically to me wink

The issue was with the cranking Pulse Width settings being a mile and a half out. This I think I have resolved for him. No self tuning ECU in the world would fix that Im afraid wink
cheers,
