Hi,

I'm thinking about swapping my de-catted exhaust Y-piece for a standard (emissions compliant!) example. Are these freely avaiable, and if so, does anyone know roughly how much they cost?

Thanks,

Chris

I bought one from TVR Dean a couple of months ago £160 posted , be careful tho as they thought the only cats were in the manifolds and not in a y piece rolleyes

Is there a way to check if the present Y-piece is decatted?

I don't have the paperwork to hand and some people do have a tendency to use the word 'full' for everything in car ads... I'd say it is louder than normal, but it's not as loud as some I've heard.

Also, I presume the Y-piece a TVR-specific part? It's not present on SD1s or anything for a fraction of the price? smile

It wouldn't pass an MOT without the main/y-piece cat. Other than testing the emissions I imagine you would see a fresh(ish) horizontal weld at the widest part of the y-piece where the cat is. I believe you can't get the cat out without cutting the y piece, unlike the pre-cats.

That's partly why I intend to change it ... I've only owned the car since November and I've yet to MOT it. I know there are places which will arrange 'alternative means' of passing the emissions test (test probe in someone else's car or whatever) but this would simplify things. Plus, although I love the noise I'm not too fussed on the volume, so something track day friendly (and neighbour friendly!) might be an advantage.

Out of interest, does anyone know what the value of a second hand de-catted y-piece would be if I sold the existing one?

I think SD1s may have been pre-cat hehe

Besides Rovers dont like cats.
Especially old dogs like SD1s

Ahem, good point. hehe

Make that 'Range Rovers', but I presume I'm still clutching at straws there...

If your Y piece is decatted you would know about it...you would be getting a terrible clatter noise from the engine bay,are you sure its decatted ?you may just have one of those cut and shut exhaust mods.I get clatter from the ACT de cat y piece and thats designed for the job..

AFAIK the exhaust set up is TVR bespoke....i believe RRs and SD1s had clunky cast iron manifolds.

SD1's did have cast manifolds but mine had tubular 4 into 1's.
IIRC they were a paultry 1.25" primary rolleyes

Probably ok for the standard 3.5 but choking for anything bigger.

I've got a spare one I was thinking about getting de catted, its the one with clamp fitting. I'm now thinking about swapping to an earlier 'bolted up' system so will have no use for the spare. If you're interested in it let me know. I'll let you have it much much cheaper than a specialist breaker smile

Hi guys,

Couple of questions...

Are all the cat-equipped factory Y-pieces (400, 450, 500) the same?

Secondly, do they ever wear out (or clog or anything)?

We should make a chimaera team, and do the 12 hour race ;-)

Your car was not "overly" loud.

Do you think it was louder than my 400?

What exhaust mods are present, it certainly was not a full decat with straight through - now that's loud.
Mine's been done since Spain wink

Are you sure your main Cats have been removed?

It's easy to tell if you have the Y-piece off.

This is how bad it sounds with the main cat removed from the standard Y piece ,Im sure you have the cut and shut exhaust mod ,replacing the perforated pipe in the silencer for solid pipe.I would have a look at the exhaust .
