I am looking to replace the shot exhaust gaskets on my Chim soon and i thought while the exhaust is off (or can be off) i might look at increasing the noise!

I've had the car about 5 months and i guess i've got used to the volume level, it's a totally stock car with no mods so i have been thinking about taking the plunge.

The thing is there seem to be so many options it's hard to make a decision.

I don't really want to go down the decat route so that narrows it down to silencer box tinkering. I have read of people doing straight through conversions and of others going down the cherry bomb route. With regard to the latter i had a look on ebay and the ones i found are around the 30-40 mark, are these the right ones?

Basically looking for thoughts and ideas on which way to go, thanks in advance.

What sort of increase does this give and is the "tone" similar?

Love the four horseman comparison!

I've been told mine sounds like an aircraft and a "war machine"...

I did my own Cherry Bomb conversion, and the end result is just what I was after - nice deep sound but not excessively loud. If you go down this route you will need the Cherry Bombs specially made, which is no problem for the supplier (Custom Chrome) as they can make them any size you want.

To fit inside the existing silencer box, you'll need 3" diameter Cherry Bombs, with a body length (i.e. the fat portion) of 12". I wanted the ends of the Cherry Bombs to fit over the stubs that are left when you cut-out the existing perforated tubes, which means that the Cherry Bomb entry & exit pipes need an ID of 2.125".

The job itself wasn't too bad to do. I cut the silencer box open with an electric jigsaw & removed the perforated tubes with a combination of disc cutter, angle grinder & hammer'n'chisel. The hardest part was actually holding the silencer body closed again so that I could weld it up. Some strong straps would have been handy (like seat belt material).

I have a series of photos showing how it was done. I can upload them to Photobucket & post the link on here if you're interested.

Mine is same as Jammy's, silencers are empty and it's woohoo every time I start her (or was anyway frown ) It makes women faint, small children jump up and down, and grown men grin biggrin

ETA: I also consider this to be a service to the community as it's enriching the lives of those who live nearby wink

Do yours still have perforated pipes but with no rockwool? or do they have solid pipes inside the silencer too?

Timja, I believe they're still perforated, although I'm not 100% sure as like Jammy mine were done by the previous owner. Sound is just king awesome... not better than sex, but not far off biggrin

on second thoughts, probably better than bad sex... (whatever that is)...scratchchin

JE Exhausts with 'solid sleeved' pipes without perforations. Deeper burble, pops when off throttle and unobtrusive when being driven. Even my naybers prefer it. Recommended.

I heard Garlick's exhaust note at the weekend, straight through and decatted.

You don't want that, unbelievably noisy!

2nd - mines like that at the mo, while i did some work to the box.
FAR too loud, altough the note at 4-5k is EPIC

im welding the box back in once i get hold of some of those rubber gromet/doughnuts that attach it to the support plate - anyone know what they are off?

OK, they're here:-

http://s127.photobucket.com/albums/p131/s7paul/TVR...

The only photo missing (because I forgot to take it) was one of the silencer just before I closed it back up. I re-used the wadding to pack around the Cherry Bombs. This may not have been necessary, but I did it for 4 reasons:-

1) Because you can't weld all round the Cherry Bomb unless you completely open up the silencer box, so I wanted to pack wadding around the part of the joint that wasn't welded.
2) Just in case it sounded at all tinny when I'd finished, I assumed the wadding would help in this respect.
3) Because the tightly packed wadding helps to support the metalwork when you're re-forming it back into shape prior to welding.
4) Because I had a bag full of wadding spare!

Thanks for putting up those pics Paul. I wondered what selection of pipes and wadding was in the box. Now I know!

Unfortunately not. It's definitely louder than standard, but not to the extent that it becomes annoying. My daughter was sat behind me in the traffic going into Goodwood earlier this year, and she couldn't hear her MX-5 engine as mine (on tickover) was drowning it out. It's nice & deep & sounds great when you put your foot down. I'm happy with the sound as it doesn't have that slightly hollow effect that some of the "straight through" conversions seem to have.

The best thing I can offer is that if you send me an email with a contact number I can give you a ring, then take the phone outside & start her up.

Do one of two things

Standard exhaust with ACT or Clives decat Y piece or sports exhaust like the JP exhaust with a standard Y piece..

Mix the two and you will be changing the setup ..
