A couple of questions please.........
Discussion
Hi
Having just replaced the cam in my car I was wondering whats the best procedure for the initial startup. I have read on a couple of other forums that its needs to be kept at a high idle (2000 rpm?) for 20 minutes and at no time allowed to idle as it loads up the new cam lobes with potentially nasty results.
Any one got any experience of doing their own?
Also...
I need to remove the radio panel (it's a Mk1) to sort out the old veneer. How do I go about it without bending it, or breaking any hidden clips etc?
Many thanks in advance

not 100% sure on the cam, but as far as i am aware yes you need to let it sit at 200 ish for quite a while. im sure someone like blitzracing will be along soon to confirm.
Your neighbours are going to love you!!!!
the radop panel is quite easy - take the radio out, and its cage, then you will see 4 2 screws each side holding the panel in.

Cam break in is important and providing you used Cam lube when you installed there should be not too much problem.
You have to start the engine as quick as you can not too much cranking.
Bring it to about 2000 RPM quickly and then vary the revs 1700-2200 for the full break in. The oil works on splash at this point and you want to vary it too splash the cam well.
Before you start ensure your fans work and don't do it on a day like today as you will never keep it cool.
20 mins total is fine, However you can do 2 times 10 min break in's if you need to.
Lastly use a good mineral oil , do not use Mobil 1 it does not have enough of the chemicals you need for a new cam and an old engine design. you can buy a break in additive. I have used this myself.

I am sure it's too late but TVR Thunder has a procedure posted in this thread.
