Hello all!

My car is making a strange grinding/clunking noise, which has become more noticeable over the last few months. It seems to be coming from the rear, and only really noticeable when turning tightly at low speed (i.e. parking) in forward and reverse, and I can also feel it a bit through my seat. I am guessing it's the diff or one of the linkages to it - is this common? It's a '98 with 56k on the clock - i'm guessing the best option is to get the diff refurbished? How much am i looking at?

Cheers! In the meantime, it's i'm going to have to live with the noise for a trip round France!

May be cv joints on the drive shafts - does the noise seem to be on one side of the rear and when turning louder to the left or right.

It is difficult to diagnose these problem even when stripped for inspection, I would check the small things first - i.e. diff oil and work from there.

edit to add - have you changed tyres or shocks recently - could be front tyre on bodywork! May be get someone to walk with you in a open car park while you try to make the noise to get a better idea of where its coming from.

my car is in the garage as we speak with a dodgy diff with the same symptons, also mine was making a knocking noise as i was pulling away very slowly in a straight line, i could feel it more than hear it,does yours do that too? in fact i never noticed the grinding while turning until the garage was having a look, i took it in for the knocking

I paid £445 to have my GKN diff refurbished by John Reid (Grantura Engineering). It's about 8hrs job in total to remove and then refit the diff though. So about £400-£450 in labour from a TVR specialist = £900ish for the full job.

I would eliminate the "cheaper" options...........wheel bearing moving in the housing. Roll bar mountings on the radius arms (need re-welding), a common prob. Loose bolts on the CVs/Diff.

Check these out first.

Best to think it's half full rather that half empty ???

Agreed, I had my diff rebfurshished as it was leaking. I doubt the grind is the diff, I get a similar sound at the rear when on full lock. Couldn't see anything wrong when it was serviced though.
