Stupid exhaust manifold
Discussion
Ok, so i've had the Chim since Thursday and it's off the road already.
Exhaust was blowing, ordered new gaskets and yesterday set about replacing them. I'd read on here it was a pain in the arse. WHAT an understatment, it took me about 3 hours to get the drivers side off. cleaned up the manifold face a bit and there is some pitting so I think it may just blow again. So i'm going to get the faces machined as little as possible, mayne 0.5mm. Does anyone see any problem in this? is there supposed to be a raised area around the ports?
Also has anyone else found the ARP bolts a bit of a pain to use? having to go round each port on the hear, copper grease on the bolts and ease them in
I was thinking machine it flat, use silicon and metal gaskets then reassemble with ARP bolts and nord washers? this should keep it fixed, I hope.

no need to machine just clean any crap off and fit new gaskets you can put new bolts in no worries i know what you mean about the time it takes i undid the bolts a week before then tightened them back up when cold of course just to make sure there was no shearing problems! just wait till you do the other side! got a day free lol as long as the job is done take as much time as you can dont rush

you can speed the process up by cutting slots in the bottom row of holes on each manifold, then fit gaskets and bolts, slide manilfolds down into place.
Excellent idea,I was thinking to drill out the holes slightly but this would make things so much easier
Do you think the faces need to be perfectly smooth though? there are some scores where it looks like the gas will flow around the manifold and just blow it off again? as its such a pain in the arse i thought i may as well just pop them to a local shop and get the faces skimmed to know its not going to happen again
machining is an adieal way to acheive a flat clean surface, but you may find that the shape of the manifolds doesn`t allow them to be clamped down onto a machine very easily to do the job.
you could try using a sander to remove any high spots, rust build up ect, but you`d need to make sure that you keep the faces flat.

This is good stuff..Hope you have the correct type gasket.!

Just use a flat file across pairs.
Its suprising just how much work it takes to remove the high spots.
I also did a little flatting on the cylinder head faces also.
Ive only just this minute ran the engine for the first time for 5 minutes since fitting it but it all sounds good.

As long as you know how to file truly flat this is the easiest way.Nosh said:

I don't how it is physically possible to get the lower nuts off of the near side manifold? so i left that side, it doesn't seem to blow and I'm praying to Tom Cruise that it doesn't.
plus one of the head bolts doesn't seem to want to go back in, trying for about an hour and gave up tonight, i'm so scared about doing any damage to those wildcat heads

You just slice into the manifold flange with a grinder, only takes 30 mins...
The studs on show there are special ones 3/8"UNC + shoulder then 1/4"UNF for small hex flange nuts, capped off with aero nuts to keep the threads clean and act as lock nuts.
Mine go on & off in about 5 mins a side, but I've probably spent countless weeks arriving at that solution
