Hi,
Is it just me, or does everyone have to replace their steering rack gaitors annually.

Mine have been changed at every MOT for the last three years. This weekend I was giving the car a once over whilst changing the front discs and pads and noticed both gaitors have holed again. Interestingly, neither gaitor has the outer cable tie in place, presume these were not fitted, which doesn't make them seal too well now does it rolleyes

Yeah i did but the old ones didn't have any so curious to see what others have done.
I have noticed that the air within the gaiters seems to be trapped rather than transferring from one end of the rack to the other on lock to lock. They look a bit wierd as they get flattened on full extention and go out of shape when the steering rod is at its shortest.

Does anyone know if this is a quirk of a TVR steering rack or whether the airway is blocked and should be cleaned out.

BTW the new ones had cable ties supplied which do the job but don't look as nice as the proper clamps.

Yep,fitted 2 sets from 2 of the well known specialist and between them they have lasted 4 years before perishing/cracking open again, next time I will match them up to a car manufacturers or well known pattern brand and get the lifespan I expect rolleyes if it turns out that they are the same as one of the earlier Toyota's I once read then that will be where they are coming from and they will at least outlast the car laugh the last thing I want is the internals of my precious PAS rack open to the elements yikes fortunately I carry out fairly regular checks on the ramp so that should never happen scratchchin

I fitted a pair, from a "tvr specialist", to my 1998 Chim Power steering rack whilst doing a body off as I noticed the old ones were cracked. So the rack has never moved in the 3 years that it has been off the car, On fitting the rack to the car I noticed the new ones after 3 years of no use are cracked!!!!.
So what other car make/model fit.

Well they should not Daz, unless you have the wrong ones fitted, most pattern rack gaiters are cheap & nasty rubber anyways, need to get some OE quality ones on there.

When the last set perrished/cracked they never made it onto the car so definatly not touching the chassis.
